Setting her bags down in the simply furnished room, Anna sighed contentedly and looked around her surroundings. There was a fair sized, wooden framed bed with a comfortable feather mattress and plain blue bedspread, a small set of drawers with a mirror and pretty wash jug and bowl set on top, an empty bookcase and a small table and rocking chair near the window.
It was perfect.
Anna Woodward had just arrived at Heron Hall to take up her appointment as governess to an eight-year-old little girl. Now, she would reside in this room. She took of her thin, leather gloves and set them on the table.
The room was not what she had been used to in her previous life, but that was ok; she was just grateful to have a roof over her head and a purpose. A few months ago her parents had died in an accident, she had been left all alone in the world, devastated, and after her Father’s debtors had come, penniless.
She had remained in the house as long as she could until eventually they took that, too. It had turned out that her Father’s business was not doing well and without him there to turn it around, the debtors called everything in; their faith gone. Destitute and alone, she had not known where to turn. She had no other family and former friends turned their backs once they realized she held no value to them.
At 21 years old, she was alone in the world and hadn’t got a clue what to do.
Her Father’s solicitor, Mr. Percy, had always held a soft spot for Anna and though he could do nothing about her loss, he made enquiries to try to help her. Just as she thought all was lost, he found her this post as governess.
She had no prior experience but was well educated herself and with Mr. Percy’s personal recommendation, the family had agreed to take her on. Anna was so grateful that she could have kissed Mr. Percy’s shiny, balding head.
Fixing her dark, auburn hair in the mirror ensuring no strand escaped the sensible style she had pinned it in, she checked herself over. She looked slightly tired, but that was understandable considering the long carriage ride she had undertaken to get here. Pinching her cheeks to put some color back into her pale face, she rubbed her hands over her light blue eyes and turned towards the door to go downstairs and greet her new mistress.
Anna walked lightly down the stairs towards the main lounge as instructed and jumped as she turned a corner and bumped bodily into someone.
Oh, I am sorry,
she exclaimed, righting herself and feeling her cheeks burn with embarrassment. She had been here five minutes and was already showing herself up.
Not at all, my fault entirely
responded the man she had collided with, amusement coloring his voice, a slow smile creeping throughout his thin face. He kept his hand on her arm and she looked at it pointedly, not wanting to appear rude by asking
