PROLOGUE
Gerard Snuif sat up in bed, clutching his chest, his heart racing as if his pump was about to blow a gasket. That had to be the coke. Happened almost daily now and still his physician didn’t want to give him beta blockers, because he had used cocaine ‘in the past’. Little did she know.
The bed next to him was cold. The girl was gone. Probably snuck out after he’d fallen asleep.
That’s what you pay them for.
He couldn’t remember who said that—some American comedian?—but there was truth in there. You don’t pay prostitutes to come over, but you pay them to leave afterward. Without drama.
He switched on the light and noticed that she hadn’t just taken the money. The small mirror was wiped clean, not even a trace of cocaine left.
Greedy bitch. Untrustworthy, the whole lot of them.
Not that he should take any cocaine now. His racing heart was winding down, but a line of coke might cause his chest to explode.
He picked up his Rolex and held the wristwatch close to his face, his blurry vision making it difficult to decipher the position the tiny hands were in.
Half past six? Jesus.
He checked his phone, which confirmed the time on his watch. He swung his legs out of bed and rubbed his face. Not a chance he could get back to sleep, not with his heart racing like that.
As he came to his feet, Gerard felt the blood drain from his head and he swayed like he was drunk. Sweat popped out on his brow.
Fuck this.
First thing this morning was another trip to his physician and demand beta blockers. Not ask like last time, but demand them.
Another bitch trying to exert power over him. Lecturing him on the use of cocaine and the consequences. He didn’t need a drug counsellor.
All she was good for was
