About this ebook

Love should bring happiness and joy... but life is complicated
In 1961 Jennifer Urquhart, a nineteen-year-old college graduate, is determined to succeed as the new teacher in Karriton, a rural town in Western Australia, but her plans begin to unravel from the moment she steps off the bus.
Although welcomed into a farming family and striving for acceptance in the community, she soon learns that malicious gossip and small town prejudice can destroy those who fail to conform to society’s rules.
Finding herself pregnant to her first love, a young geologist who has been transferred to a remote site, Jennifer is desperate to find the father and keep her child. Eventually, she must make an almost impossible choice.

Author

Victoria Mizen

I am a writer of novels, short stories, poems and travel tales. I published a poetry collection called 'Friends in my Garden' in 1995 and in December 2014 my first novel, 'The Green Velvet Dress' was published and is selling well through retail outlets in Western Australia. I was born in Perth, WA, have lived here most of my life, but have also travelled widely in America and Europe. I spent ten years from 1985 commuting between our London flat and our Perth home as well as the family farm at Pemberton. Each of these situations, plus the people I met, have provided material for my writing. My novel, 'The Green Velvet Dress', about a young school teacher sent to a small country town in Western Australia, is based on my experiences teaching in a similar situation in 1961. I am interested in the way we interact with our surroundings: a sense of place often plays an important role in my writing. When travelling I take pleasure in studying the architecture and the landscape. How people respond to their surroundings I find endlessly fascinating. Apart from reading and writing, I love travel, listening to classical music, my garden and spending time with family and friends. I have three children and six grand children, a wide range of friends and and a large extended family. My partner and I live in the hills near Perth. We share the joy of nature all around us.
