- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5DNF.
I hate spineless wimps like Jarrod. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Cool teenage magic romance with time travel, please don't be asking for miracles and don't touch anything else by Ms Curley!
"Old Magic" was for me the fanfic before the fanfic, it has two teens forced to timetravel to the past and be fake married to discover how the curse placed upon one of them came to their family. It pretty much had me at pretend to be married, so totally self-indulgent pleasure for 15 year old me, to the point I made sure to re-acquire the book when I lost the first copy. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Summary: Kate Warren believes in magic - she might try to hide it from the rest of her small town, but she and her grandmother can both do witchcraft. So when the new kid, Jarrod Thornton, starts demonstrating power beyond anything Kate's ever dreamed of, power that's out of his control, Kate's the only one to recognize it for what it is. But Jarrod doesn't believe in magic, and thinks the strange outbursts that occur whenever he's angry or worked-up are just part of the bad luck that's plagued him and his family his whole life. Kate knows better though, and thinks that the root of it might be in a centuries old-curse placed on Jarrod's family. But how can they break the curse when Jarrod doesn't even believe that it's real?Review: I didn't go into this book with particularly high expectations - the blurb and the cover (and probably my summary up there, as well) all make it look like pretty run-of-the-mill YA paranormal romance. And, for the first half of the book, that's more-or-less what it delivered. I mean, good YA paranormal romance, but nothing particularly standout, other than the paranormal part was witchcraft rather than vampires or werewolves or what have you.But the good news is, the book wound up pleasantly surprising me. About halfway through, the book takes a left turn into time travel and historical fiction, which added a very interesting layer onto the standard YA romance that I haven't come across before. I mean, I'm not sure that the metaphysics of time travel would play out like they did in this book, but there's something undeniably charming about forcing your two leads, who haven't even admitted that they like each other much, to play-act at being married, because why else would they be together unchaperoned in the Dark Ages? It was a fun twist to the story, and it's a much stronger book for not sticking strictly to formula.I did have a few issues with this book. My primary one was that there was too much tell-but-not-show-ing going on, particularly when it came to the character development. Kate's chapters involve a lot of her telling Jarrod (and the reader) how much of a coward he is - primarily because he doesn't believe in magic - when his actions, even in the beginning of the book, don't really match that assessment. After a while, I was at the point of grumbling "He's not being spineless, he's being rational, you daft girl." every time it came up... which was a lot. I get that Jarrod developing his courage was supposed to be his major character arc, but I never entirely bought it, mostly because I didn't think he was that bad in the first place.I'm also ashamed to admit how long it took me to realize that Marianne Curley was Australian. I spent an embarrassingly large part of this book thinking that it took place in the Pacific Northwest - my only reference for somewhere that has both rain forest and seasonal snow - and it wasn't until someone mentioned kookaburras outside their window that I finally twigged. And then I realized that what I'd been taking for strange narrative tics and weird turns of phrase were probably actually Australian colloquialisms. Whoops! 4 out of 5 stars.Recommendation: Even if you're feeling burnt out on teen paranormal romance, I think Old Magic is a good choice for a light, fun read that manages to have a number of unique elements but still feels comfortable at the same time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5History, magic and teen romance! All my favourite things rolled up together.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I LOVED this story. This was the first Marianne Curley book I read. The traveling back in time was enjoyable and the characters were likeable. I've recommended it to others and they have enjoyed it, too.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Katie and Jarrod are from opposite sides of the popularity scale. Jarrod is handsome, and although a recent transfer student, suddenly popular. Katie is considered something of a weirdo since her Aunt owns a new age shop. Both Katie and her aunt are real witches with healing and other powers. Jarrod has his own power which he was totally unaware of. They discover that Jarrod's family is under a curse and the only way to remove it is to destroy the warlock who placed the curse on them. Unfortunately, the warlock has been dead for over a hundred years. Katie and Jarrod have to make the perilous journey back in time to remove the curse.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well..what can I say? This book is both mesmerizing and captivating. It's a story about a girl who has extraordinary powers that are more that normal. Kate Warren and Jarrod team up to find out why Jarrod's family has had so many mysterious and dooming accidents. The only question is...will they be able to find out about Jarrod's past and fix it before time runs out and its too late? Intriguing and magical, Marianne Curley's debut novel is a story of great mystery, love, and the past...and whether Jarrod and Kate can fix it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book has a little of everything thrown into one decently sized novel. I was easily sucked into Old Magic and found myself feeling the emotions of both Jarrod and Kate. Something I hate to see is novels that lack character development and growth, this one does not lack either. While I found myself disappointed at Jarrod in the beginning of this story, his character grew dramatically and believably, and I found myself rooting both main characters on during their journey. Surprisingly, the time travel didn't disrupt the story. For me it added depth and livened the story dramatically. This book was thrilling and always gave me something to go on for, including Jarrod and Kate's growing romance which set the tone and edge for this story along with a full plot. This is definitely worth a read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5** spoiler alert ** This is such a hushed up, secret, compassionate book about family and love, as well as a delicious twist of suspense and magic, evilness, and it includes a gawky kid who you don't know how perfect he really will become. (pssssst:he defeats rhauk!!!) I really love this book.It brings you into a different time frame, a unique and different story. A story you'll never forget.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Kate has no family history and no past, only her grandmother, her home and her forest where she has always lived. She has always been the odd one out, never fitting in, but despite being unpopular and very different she has long accepted the fact that she is unique and is confident in herself and secure in who she is.Jarrod is new in town, having moved around a lot with no one place to call home. In spite of this Jarrod has a close and loving family that can trace its history all the way back to the Middle Ages. Although being the new kid Jarrod has managed to fit in, quickly becoming very popular, even with his insecurities and self doubts.Jarrod easily sees how unusual Kate is, however Kate alone is able to see how unique Jarrod truly is. As much as Jarrod wants to like Kate he can't get over her weirdness, but for the sake of his love ones can he believe in Kate and the impossible? For Kate, the more she finds out about Jarrod the more she is frustrated with him; and the more she likes him. But will they be able to hold on to their new found friendship?Old Magic is powerful enough to make the impossible possible and strong enough to last through all time. It is said that you can't truly move forward without learning from the mistakes of the past, and for Kate and Jarrod they get the chance to change the past to save the future. An enchanted quest that moves through time, putting into perspective the importance of peer pressure and fitting in when compared to the greater issues of family, friendship, and standing up for what is right.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love this book I've read it about 3 times. i love the whole split persective going from Kate to Jarrod.. i love the fact that he likes her regardless of the fact that shes suppose to be a freak and hes intrigued by her.. i Loved the time traveling... all in all a really entertaining book..
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I read another series by Marianne Curley that was written similar and had a similar plot to Old Magic so I was not that impressed by this book. I read it in a few hours however and if you ever happen to have this book and a day by the pool go ahead and pick it up to enjoy yourself some young adult fantasy. On the other hand if you don't have this book or a pool, don't bother--pick up a better written book and a cozy corner.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Old Magic by Marianne Curley has everything, curses, romance, and time travel. The point of view also switches between Kate and Jarrod, making the story that much more interesting. I would recommend this book and the Guardians of Time Trilogy (also by Marianne Curley) to any fantasy book lover.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Amazing!I just love this book!!!One of my favourites!!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5After finishing harry potter, and the pellinor books,i decided to give more fantasy a go, i saw this book had great ratings,so i got it out from my libary..Erm,its ok, but very forgettable in my opinion. im 20yrs old, maybe this is why? i just assumed it was an adult read. Now alot of books marked as 'teen' are just as good for adults, but this one sadly, is not. i found nothing to excite me, all i cared about was finishing the book,as once i start a book i HAVE to finish it..odd i know. Anyway, this book would maybe of intrested me more if i were 11/12.. for anybody above 15 though,i cant see them enjoying this.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I LOVE this book! This was the first book of Marianne Curleys I ever read and it sucked me into her world. The story is original. The characters are complex. I loved the time-travel and their powers are unique. I really couldn't get enough of this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really enjoyed this book, even though I'm not a really big reader of time traveling books (until Marianne Curley, that is). The only complaint I have is the rather abrupt ending to the story, I would have liked to have had a little more decription there.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Set in the now and the past, this story of psychic ability and magic is interesting during the now but the past part is a bit forced.
