I found this edgy and scary. I really liked the usual shifter tropes are averted. There aren't any fated mates and at the ending Mal really isn't able to resist killing after his first shift because of the power of true love. Instead they use their brains and break Zach out of there before the shift. There is a noncon scene that I found intrusive and unnecessary, but it is easily skipped over. A sequel would be welcome, but it is more of a "start of their adventures" ending than a true cliff hanger.
