The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai, an island in the North Pacific. Every year, they send warriors to battle the mermaids that are driving them into poverty. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, they must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid's allure.
Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that's haunted her since childhood: a mermaid by the name of Lysi. When she reunites with Lysi in battle, her worst nightmare comes true. She must decide between fighting for the mermaid she loves and becoming the ruthless killer her people trained her to be.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I absolutely enjoyed this book. I was completely hooked almost immediately and I'm desperately awaiting the end of my work day so I can start the sequel. This story was more riveting than I expected and I've already started recommending it to all of my friends. Definitely worth the read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a fantastic story and a joy to read. Once the young women set out on the ship the book was such a page turner that I couldn't put it down. This story had the full package of amazing battle scenes, characters, imagery, dialogue, fantasy, burgeoning love story, the works. I was completely delighted that young women drove the tale especially in this genre of books. The suspense, bad ass slaughter scenes and developments between the characters reminded me of Dog Soldiers, Jaws, and Lord of the Flies all mixed together with a big dose of uniqueness and charm all its own. I loved this book and can't wait for the sequel. Thank you to Tiana Warner for writing it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was quite a read. I enjoyed the gritty atmosphere and how I was hooked on the story and attached to the characters. If you like a sapphic forbidden romance, this will most likely be for you!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this book! The story was really interesting and the emotions so well written I could feel Meela's anxieties and fears.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Really liked it just think that the relationship btwn the two of them shouldve been a little bit more developed. well not developed but make me fangirl i guess if you know what i mean
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Beautifully constructed characters and plot. Engaging taking you on that journey with the characters! Could not stop reading!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome book! Pls write a sequel I loved it and want more!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was pleasantly surprised by Ice Massacre as I was not convinced by the synopsis that I would really enjoy this novel. The story was very fast paced and certainly a break from the norm - approaching the mermaid mythos in a refreshing and original way. I particularly liked the way that the author subtly indicated the similarities between the humans and the mermaids, both clashing because of their similar desires and belief that the other race were vicious savages. My favourite parts were towards the beginning of the story as I felt that the extended flashback of Meela's childhood really added depth to her character and the overall setting of the tale. Unfortunately, the second half of the story did not hold my attention quite so well (there are a limited number of ways that an author can present battling aboard a ship) but they were still exciting enough to make me want to know how the story would end.Unfortunately, the cliff hanger ending was also a little disappointing - particularly as I thought this was a stand alone story as I can't find any mention anywhere to this being part of a series. It left so many lose ends and did not even give me the pleasure of seeing Dani get her comeuppance. Still, at least it left me curious enough to want to read the next novel. The story's only real issue was that it had a large cast and so could not take time to develop them all. Because of this, there were only three or four girls out of the twenty that I actually cared about. The rest were only just name dropped and so their deaths did nothing to really upset me. I loved Meela as she was a really strong female protagonist and really enjoyed seeing her relationship with Lysi develop over the course of the story, but really can't say the same thing about anyone else. All in all though it was a really gripping read and I thoroughly look forward to seeing how the story will conclude in a later novel.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/58/7/17: CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP! Great quality for a first audiobook. Though the narrator pronounces a few names differently than I did in my head. I can't wait to listen to Ice Crypt <3
2/21/17: I LOVE IT JUST AS MUCH (or more) THAN I DID BEFOREEEEEEE
Inital reaction: Oh my ding dang why is this over? THAT LAST LINE. UGH I CANT TAKE IT! A well thought out and organized and not crazy fangirling review to come!

So, I’ve been searching for a perfect mermaid book since the dawn of time and none ever meet my expectations, but Tiana Warner did it! This is a classic warrior-falls-for-the-enemy book, but it’s so much more than that. We have a bad ass female POC warrior falling for a beautiful, pale skinned mermaid. IT’S PERFECT! And what’s more perfect is that Meela doesn’t quite understand it until the very end, but she never fights her feelings for Lysi (mermaid).
The only issues I had was the “love interest” male character who confesses his love, quite unexpectedly, in chapter one, but Meela wants nothing of it. Another review I read called him the “Gale character,” and I agree with that comparison. Thankfully, it’s clear that Meela isn’t interested and that she only loves him as a brother, at most.
The other issue was WHY DO MAIN CHARACTERS REFUSE TO EXPLAIN THEMSELVES! That frustrates me to no end. There are so many things that could be solved with a simple explanation. Yeah, I know they aren’t real and that the author wrote them that way, but think how a story could come out if everyone was on the same page for once! But I digress.
Okay, so, a million thumbs up for (nearly all) native POC characters. Another million for nearly ALL women characters who can fend for themselves (actually they take over for men soooo...). I love that there’s an interracial/species, lesbian relationship budding and I want to gush so much!
Warner’s take on mermaids is so refreshing after reading so many trope-y mermaid books. Of course, Warner’s mermaids are beautiful and like to lure men to their deaths, but they’re not so pretty underneath. When these mermaids feel threatened, they turn to a seaweed-y green color, their teeth sharpen, and their eyes (the whole eye) turns blood red. Oh, and they also eat human flesh.
I enjoyed seeing the budding friendship between Meela and Lysi as children and how they reconnected under the worst circumstances as new adults. I loved seeing the development of the single novel, and then seeing where the series would go.
I was sad when people died, and mad when certain ones didn’t. I was pining for Lysi right along side Meela, feeling her betrayal and her love for her. I’m still pining for her...
I love this book so much and I’m so excited that the sequel, Ice Crypt comes out in 3 days (which I also pre-ordered)! The cover is beautiful, her writing is beautiful, the world is cold, and vivid, but also beautiful. This whole book is wonderful. Now, to bide my time until I get my hands on the next one. *rubs hands together menacingly* - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is probably one of the most intense and action-filled books I have read in quite a while. Even during the times where the girls are not fighting mermaids, which by the way are not your average mermaids. They are just as battle-hardened as these girls, with long sharp fangs, blood-red eyes, and the strength of I don't know how many men. This does not count the ability to allure their victims, which really cannot be considered during this Massacre since the girls don't really fall for that. But let us start at the beginning.Eriana Kwai, which reminds me of Hawaii, has been forced to fight for their livelihood and overall survival over the years due to their waning fish numbers. Why are the fish numbers waning? Because the mermaids which live in the waters are preventing them from actually getting any. They are brutally killing any and all that they can who even attempt to fish in their waters. And because of the people's inability to fish, they are unable to trade with others, thus they are unable to actually get the necessities they need to thrive. So, the Massacres started. Many lives are lost each year, both mermaid and Eriana Kwai warrior, and for the past five years, the time it takes to train each new batch of warriors, none have returned from the journey. Well, in Meela's time, the people of Eriana Kwai believe these girls have a (pun intended) fighting chance of finally, since Meela's father's time, making a true dent in the mermaid population and returning home. But it is not going to be so easy. Besides dealing with flesh-eating demons such as the mermaids, the girls will deal with warring factions in their own ranks, the sanity, or insanity mind you, of one of the crew, murder, and mutiny. And the main character, Meela herself, will have an internal battle when her secret from childhood causes her to question if what they are doing, the war they are fighting, is even right? Or can the freedom of the people of Eriana Kwai be found another way? I absolutely positively want the next book to be here tomorrow. I am completely serious. The story itself is heartbreaking and joyful, very rarely but it's there, and breathtaking and just so amazingly written. I am literally on the edge of my seat, or beanbag since they are so cool, waiting for Meela's story to continue. She is just so strong and fights for what she completely believes is right in her heart, even when no one else believes it. She is such an honorable girl and I have to know that she will get the ending she so rightly deserves. Peace between species, and the one she loves.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The Pacific Island of Eriana Kwai has been in a war with the demons of the ocean, mermaids, who have been known to eat human flesh. Isolated and unable to even fish, the inhabitants of Eriana Kwai continuously run low on resources and send their young men on a massacre against the mermaids every year. When the massacres start to fail, a new strategy is developed to train and send the young women of Eriana Kwai, since they can not be hypnotized under the mermaids spell. Meela is one of the twenty girls chosen to train for the massacre. As a child Meela thought she had befriended a mermaid, only to find out she had been tricked. Her brother was also killed on a previous massacre. Now, Meela must decide if she wants to fight for the freedom of her island at the sake of killing an entire species. An awesome mermaid story, with strong female warriors that were both human and mermaid. I loved that the mermaids were fierce, creatures that were capable of destroying humans with their super strength and speed. The set up of the relationship between Meela and mermaid Lysi was really interesting, not really knowing what the drive behind it is. The added dramatics of twenty young women on a ship together was almost as intense as all of the battle scenes themselves, creating internal as well as external struggles. I can't wait to learn more about what the mermaid king wants as well as where Meela and Lysi's relationship is going...very intriguing. This book was received for free in return for an honest review.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5An intriguing take on war between humans and merpeople. Drama between friend and foe as well as battles and adventures on the sea make Ice Massacre an action-packed tale. I also enjoyed the friendship between a girl and a mermaid until the last sentence. The author gave hints throughout the book, but I kept hoping they would not lead to what I guessed. However, it happened, and the last sentence ruined the story for me. Consequently, I do not see myself reading the next book. ***I received a free copy of this book, and in exchange, I have provided an honest review.***
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/53.75 StarsA YA adventure fantasy with mermaids. The plot is interesting and it's not your typical girly mermaid story; think Lord of the Flies, but with teenaged girls on a boat fighting a war against some scary merfolk. The ocean setting is a major character in itself and the rest of the characters are tough warriors. There's some detailed battle and action scenes, betrayal, brutality, and survival strategies throughout that make the storyline worth a read, especially if you are looking for something different. It leaves off for a sequel (which I look forward to reading), but a large part of the book is fighting. There is potential for the sequel to have more going on.LT Member Giveaway
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I found myself captivated by the story of the young woman who has to save her people even though it means she will probably have to kill her best friend in the massacre. We see Meela’s friendship with the mermaid Lysi build toward a betrayal that drives us through to the annual massacre.Tiana creates a believable world of the far north where the people of an isolated island must battle the mermaids to survive. It was hard to put down because the author was able to draw me into the battle with Meela. I wanted the islanders to win, but I knew that there must be another way.I recommend this book to anyone who loves a complex story of love, loyalty, and discovery.
