About this ebook

“On the last day of his life, Royce Williams met a woman who literally took his breath away …” When Claire Delaney’s lover confesses he’s a werewolf, she laughs; when he begs permission to turn her, she laughs again—kinky sex, anyone?—and tells him to go for it. When she regains consciousness, she isn’t laughing any more. As Claire learns to adapt to her new life, her lover finds his integrity compromised: by a lusty and mysterious female who seduces him into sharing his lycanthropy in return for a special gift of her own. But when he insists they share this gift, the woman realizes his loyalty remains with Claire—and knows she must destroy them both. As if Claire’s conflicted morality at her own righteous kills aren’t enough, she now finds herself pursued on two fronts: by a covert agent who seeks to protect her and by the seductress who wants to kill her. All three paths will ultimately cross…..and the battle for Claire’s soul will climax at the intersection.

So I'm mixed about this book, very mixed. I liked the story, I did not like the characters. I liked the plot, I did not like the lack of background that was needed to tie the story together. I liked the idea of werewolves being vigilantes, I did not like the ambivalent character and her incredibly ambivalent morals. So allow me to explain this a bit more. I like preternatural stories, pretty sure I went over that in my last review, however I'm not overtly keen on the myths being completely debunked and ignored. For example this tale spoke of werewolves but said vampires didn't exist, but in the end there was a character that was very vampire-ish to me. There was some brief mention of history but nothing conclusive that tied everything together. How does one be a vampire-ish character AND a werewolf? Where did the werewolves begin? Why did you put in the name Corvinus (hello Underworld fans!) and not elaborate on it? There was too may inconsistencies in the storytelling to make it believable. The characters as well were lacking. In what I'm not completely sure, but I could not relate or empathize with any of them. The main character was distant, lacking emotion and one dimensional. The others were mere decoration. The only character that was remotely fleshed out (pun intended) was the bad girl, and even she was lacking detail and information to make one hate or feel sorry for her. By removing the 'hero' so early it left the story and direction hanging and uncertain. He was the one with history and information to complete the story but was taken out too soon. I liked the idea of him being killed and did feel it fuelled the plot, but it was just too soon for him to die (sorry, spoiler there!). There is a lot of potential in this tale but I think it needs another round at the drawing board and a review of what is needed and what could be removed. There were parts of the story that were missing, and others that were unnecessary. Some of the plot twists near the end were unexplained and just too far out of left field to make one actually relish the idea. Last minute details on the disappearance and death of characters was trite and should have either been told earlier or left out altogether. And one part I just couldn't agree with was the pettiness of the bad girl and her 'revenge' so to speak on the good girl. It was a little juvenile for me and considering the character it didn't make sense. Yet I liked it. I finished it relatively quickly which is usually a good sign since it means I wanted to know what happened. I was just left unsatisfied with the conclusion.

So, I loved this book! I received it way back in November 2011 as part of LibraryThing Early Reviewers, but the book cover and title really threw me off and didn't appeal to me. Like another reviewer said, "Don't judge a book by its cover!" I started reading the book yesterday and I couldn't put it down! Just finished it a few minutes ago and I loved the plot, the flow, the characters ... it was a little gross at some points and there was one part where a serial killer was thinking back to the time (in detail) when he killed a cat that just birth and then its kittens that, I have to say, really made my stomach turn and was really not necessary to the overall need to dislike the character (he had just killed some people, so it obvious we shouldn't like him!). But I digress, the ending was also pretty awesome; I love the last line! I think the author has left room for a sequel and, if so, I would definitely love to read it!

To be honest, I didn't finish this book. I stuck with it as long as I could, but was forced to put it down. I tried so hard to like it, but I found the characters to be very unlikable. I didn't care about any of them. I could see this appealing to others, but it was definitely not for me.

When Lukas, a handsome TA at Claire Delaney’s college, approached her at a bar, she had no idea that her life would change so drastically. At first she thought their meeting was just a cliché encounter that you could find in any smutty romance novel but as they talked she found him so intriguing she could not let him slip away. During their first night together, he begged her to share his gift with him. Unwittingly she accepts and soon finds that her whole life has been turned inside out. You will have to read this book to find out if her new found abilities are a curse or a gift. This novel is classified as horror and is not for readers with weak stomachs as it is filled with a lot of killing. I do want to point out however that this is a wonderful book filled with romance, animals, and some seriously vindictive behavior. It is well worth the read if you like fantasy romance and are not turned off by grossness.

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't one that I picked up and finished in one setting, but it still didn't take me very long at all. It's not the best book I've read, but by far not the worst. The storyline and characters were intersting. I thought the middle of the book was kind of blah, but the beginning and the end were quite likeable. At times, I felt the story was a bit predictable, but that could just be me. I have an annoying habit of figuring out plotlines quickly. The end of the epilogue was actually my favorite part and made it worth reading all the way to the end.

Received book via LibraryThing.com Early Reviewers. Here's my review. This book is OK. The story about a werewolf is a bit different than one's I've read in the past but I had a hard time clicking the characters. Most likely due to the direct and crude way of writing about the characters and the story line. Without the 'connection' between any of the characters it was hard for me to enjoy this book. Claire's decision making was a bit off and I didn't like the villain. The side characters were easier to connect with and the only thing that made the story enjoyable (for me). I also didn't care for the gore in the book nor the type of language used, especially where I felt it was unnecessary. The lack of character connection and the writing style is what I did not like about this book. The story line is unique and why I gave this book a 2 1/2 (out of 5) rating.

This book actually was a bit different than I was expecting. It wasn't so much like your typical, serialized werewolf novel, but rather the first half of the book played out more like a slow romance novel. There didn't seem to be too much happening, and the description of a lot of this nothing drug on for far too many pages...with the occasional bit of action. The second half of the book was way, way better than the first half. The pace of the plot speed up and it was hard to put the book down.

From: Lilac Wolf and StuffThe title Pentacle Pendant certainly catches your attention, but the cover seems a little stiff. It really left me unsure about the story. Here is proof of the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover."The characters are all deeply written, there is no black and white within the story, except for the woman who demands revenge on Claire...and for something Claire had no control or knowledge of.The story takes place almost exclusively in New England. Claire is getting ready and graduate college with an English degree and no idea what to do with it. She finds a boyfriend and a job in the same night. Sure then he turns her into a werewolf, but no relationship is perfect. Claire hates what she has become, but loves her new career and friends that she meets through work. The story was intriguing and consistently built in intensity to the climax of the story. The only thing that left me wanting more were the few times the author dragged out a description and never really made it clear. In fact, the word vampire was never used, and werewolf was rare. It was hemophage and metamorph. Interesting words, but occasionally it did cause frustration. All in all, DeBock is a good author and I had a hard time putting this story down. Even when I was so tired I could barely think, I had to know what was happening to Claire. By the way, don't read this when your husband is freeway driving in the rain...the two situations don't mix well. LOL

I enjoyed this book! It started out a little slow, with characters who were hard to relate to. But as the book progressed, the characters' thoughts and actions became more believable and easier to relate to. By mid-book I was attached to the Claire, and really cared about what happened to her. And although the middle of the book was a little slow moving, the last few chapters were fantastic! It's not a book that I would associate with the horror genre, I'd consider it more sci-fi/fantasy.

Early reviewers copy. This book has some interesting twists on the werewolf trope, but unfortunately, the main character never clicked for me. Her decisions regarding her boyfriend seemed very strange, considering that he'd turned her into a werewolf against her will. The book livened up a bit after Daciana became a werewolf, unfortunately she was a bit of a cartoon villain. All in all, not a book for me.

I got this book through earlier reviewers. The beginning of the story is a little difficult to get through and at first seems typical of a werewolf / vampire book. But once the introduction is completed the story begins twist and characters develop into an unexpected ending.Claire is twenty one years old when her boyfriend turns her into a werewolf without her permission. She struggles to deal with her dual self and her relationship with Lukas, her boyfriend. The story really started to get interesting to me when Lukas get killed by Daciana, but not before he changes her into a were wolf as well and killing Daciana husband. Daciana is out to ruin Claire's life by killing all the people she loves, and kill her as well. The story is well written, though very graphic and gory. The characters are believable and develop throughout the book.

I got this book from Library Thing Early reviewers. I have to admit that this book was definitely different from other werewolf books I have ever read. I loved both of the main characters Clair and Rowena, and i didn't really like Lukas. The beginning was a little unwelcoming but once i got past that I couldn't stop reading. I have to admit that the plot of this story was something that i have never seen this before. The twist on werewolves was sort of disturbing, but i enjoyed it either way. The first couple of chapters kind of shut me down but i still liked the book a lot.

The Pentacle Pendant by Stephen M. DeBock was a good read. Although the beginning did not draw me in the way I wish it would've, the story did get better from there. I loved the dialogue within the novel and I found it a easy read. I felt that the middle and the end of the novel were much stronger than the beginning. Overall, I would recommend this book to paranormal lovers everywhere. It does have a few kinks but it's still a good read.

The White Mountains of New Hampshire hold more than beautiful trees, universities and other delights. They also hold things best left unspoken. When Claire meets Lukas at the college bar on her twenty-fourth birthday, she was immediately smitten. He was nice, good looking and obviously swept away by her. What more can you ask for your birthday?A bit more, as it turns out. Lukas is so in love/lust that he gives Claire a birthday gift she can’t return. He makes her like him – a werewolf. Not only a werewolf, but one who takes justice into his own….well….fangs. He sees people who are cruel, unlawful and otherwise goodness-impaired and takes them out. Claire can’t understand the whole thing for awhile, but then realizes she can’t go back to the beginning and get a “do-over” so she goes along.Their time together is full of love and love making. Claire learns more about her new abilities and then, right in the middle of it all; Lukas’ professor enters the picture. A looker named Daciana who is a lot more than she seems. Lukas turns up missing as do many of the people in Claire’s life. Seems Daciana has a gift of her own! This is a page-turner of great proportion! Mr. DeBrock has a good cast of characters, a plot worthy of chills and a book for by-the-fire reading. Claire is a captivating heroine.

I don't read much romance/erotica, so I'm judging this as I would judge any book... I don't know how it would hold up against similar books in its own genre.I liked that this didn't follow the "girl meets devastatingly handsome/interesting werewolf, begs him to make her like him" thing. However, I hated the fact that he forced this life-altering change on her, tricked her into becoming a werewolf, and she yells at him for five minutes and then never brings it up again. Their relationship goes on as planned, even though she suffered this devastating act of betrayal. That was the most unbelievable part of the book. It was especially bad because that scene was what most of the synposis/blurb was about, and the thing I was most looking forward to. The PUNS/alliteration/cutesy phrasing in this book alone made me almost throw it against a wall within the first few chapters. The protagonist is a "quirky" girl with a "quirky" overuse of word play, which they attribute to her being an English major (I have never met an English major with this quirky [read: insufferable] habit).I thought the sex scenes were very well done, and I loved that the author wasn't afraid to have his characters get aroused by murder and darkness. It was all very believable, given their situation. The characters/plot was an issue for me. The story is about two people in a relationship. All other characters, no matter how interestingly they are described, have very little bearing on the story. And almost ALL of the side characters sound far more interesting than the two protagonists, but they blink in and out of the book and don't really "matter" in the course of the plot. It's very frustrating.Since the relationship is the most important element of this book, you'd think it would be a more interesting relationship. But instead we're forced into reading long emails (the kind that are only interesting to the people in the relationship) and an entire chapter dedicated to a dinner with the boss (complete with the worst seafood puns I have ever heard). These are such mundane, trivial things... I found myself almost shouting "GET ON WITH THE WEREWOLF STUFF ALREADY."I was very bored with the book, but felt it was based on original ideas and had potential for being a very interesting novel, if it had been done a little better.

This is my review for the Early Reviewers GroupThis is a refreshing book that isn't a cliche in the werewolf genre. Personally I loved this book (despite its very graphic scenes of carnage) for the way the story is told. The story starts with a prologue and the chapter one goes back in time and leads up to that initial glimpse. I loved the aspect of the protagonist Claire working for a publishing company (which ties in nicely at the end, but I won't spoil the fun here). The book flows nicely, doesn't really drag ever, and has characters and actions that seem plausible and likely of real people. If you believe in werewolfs this could be accepted as a true tale and not a work of fantasy.

Normally, a book takes me anywhere from a day to three days to read. This book, took me five days to read. I am by no means saying this as if it were a bad thing, so please don't take it that way. I am say this, because this is the first book of this kind I can say I have read. Sure the books with werewolves and vampires all have some gore to them. This one however, well it took the cak..., yeah that's not the right word for it. With that being said, please note if you don't have the stomach or heart to read gore . . this may not be the book for you. If you love the down and dirty, nasty and bloody . . well you just hit the jackpot. There were a few times I had to walk away from this book, I just couldn't wrap my mind around what I was reading. I pressed on, not wanting to give up and I'm very glad I did. Would I recommend this book, Sure. Just not to every book reader I know. This one is like a fine wine, one that the reader will have to have a "taste" for, in order to enjoy it fully. Very well written, and engaging. You can't help but feel as if you know the people you are reading about, and when it's all said and done. You will grieve and rejoice with them as well.

I was totally captivated from the beginning. I loved the twist on the curse and the removal of the stereo-types. With so many werewolf books on the market, I was mostly expecting another along those lines. This took me in a direction I was not expecting, and thoroughly enjoyed.

Undergrad student Claire’s encounter with Lukas, a T.A., with whom she falls in love, sets in motion a series of events that make her a werewolf – albeit quite reluctantly. Then they become “two righteous killers.” This debut novel combines the classic elements of the werewolf story with some social criticism (the werewolf’s victims are immoral – wife-beaters and thugs). It follows the trend of werewolves with a conscience (here they are researchers) and some remorses. Nothing new but genre fans will like it.If you didn't like that Twilight was sex-free, you can certainly not say this about his novel.

this is a story about Claire who is turned into a werewolf by her lover. The book is about how she adjusts to the life of being a werewolf while still trying to hold onto her humanity. Normally, I'm into paranormal books, but this one just didn't seem to hook me. It's readable, but slow in places and the characters act in ways that really make you want to shake them, hard. The book it well written, but it just didn't grab me like it should have.

I received this book via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. This book was different from other werewolf books I have read. It was a bit tough to get into in the beginning, but picks up about 1/4 through and will keep you reading. The plot wasn't something I have seen/read before. It was quite a twist on werewolves and I really enjoyed it. It is a bit gory but worked well in this story. A werewolf that is a vigilante is something I can get on board with.I really enjoyed how well the characters were developed. I enjoyed Claire and Rowena. I disliked Lukas, and I despised Daciana. Overall, it was an excellent read, but because it didn't catch my attention and I struggled to actually want to come back to it after the first three chapters I give it the rating I did.

I have to say, when I started this book, I wasn't terribly into it. But I am so glad I stuck with it. It took a while to find its rhythm and the plotting is a bit uneven, but I really enjoyed it. There were some great twists that caught me off guard and didn't feel trite or cliched. The second half is definitely stronger, so do stick with it; I think you'll find it's worth the effort.Word of warning: This book is extremely graphic in terms of the violence, so be wary if that sort of thing upsets you.

English major Claire Delaney just wanted a drink on her birthday and somehow managed to meet the guy of her dreams instead. Until a few months later he sprouts fangs and turns her into a "metamorph" - apparently thats the politcally correct term for a werewolf. Encouraging both parts of the lifestyle Claire and dream-boy Lukas hunt both dear and wife-beaters, until Lukas disappears. When I picked this up I thought it'd be some sort of gratuitous twilight copy. Boy was I wrong. It's not the type of book that made me drop everything and read but it did make me want to finish it. There's somewhat uninteresting sex, bloody murder and vindictive scheming, not to mention a really grotesque description of execution techniques. The characters are interesting and likeable (or hateable in some cases) and the plot is easy to follow with few surprises. I'm a bit disappointed at the ending, it wasn't much different than the rest of the book. Overall, really good for a random pick.

I sat down this morning and didn't stop reading until this story was done. I did this for many reasons, but the first one was that I just wanted to finish the story as quickly as I could because I found it so grisly. I had a hard time eating today. This is not your typical werewolf story (not by todays 'were' standards) so I was surprised with all the erm...feasting etc., Not for someone with a weak stomach, that's for sure.I could not help but be engrossed in the story itself (pun not intended but a funny accident!). I cared about what would happen to the main character and her friends and other connections. I loved the way that the nemesis of the story was so very evil and her origins were a wonderful idea. I haven't ever read a story like this which makes me value it even more. It was well written, well planned and concluded well, so I am happy with it. A nice diversion for a day (just not for a pizza party!)

This book would not crack my top 100. It was okay, but not great. For starters, this is not for the youngsters. Numerous, numerous sex scenes in the beginning. I was starting to wonder if any content was going to surface. Some of the characters are under developed. The book flowed pretty well until the very end. At this point it felt rushed.

The Pentacle PendantBy: Stephen M. DeBockISBN: 9781936564279Expected Publication: October 14, 2011 Available Format: Hardcover, Paperback, ebookMy Rating: ★★★★☆In the throes of passion, Claire doesn’t take her lover seriously when he confesses he is a werewolf and asks if he can change her. When she awakes, it isn’t such a joke to her any longer. Claire manages to somehow adjust to her new life. Soon, however, her lover is led astray by another woman who wants his gift as well as his loyalty. When she realizes his heart belongs to Claire, she vows to destroy both their lives forever. Now, Claire is pursued by agents who wish to protect her and the evil that wishes to end her life. Who will succeed, and will Claire’s humanity survive the heartbreak and loss she must endure along the way?Don’t let the synopsis fool you. This isn’t really a romance novel. There are werewolves and vampires and big, burly military guys…okay, so that doesn’t help much does it? Well, how about a kick ass protagonist who is after the next righteous kill and a nasty vampire that mutilates her boyfriend?I love the way Claire’s character was introduced as cruel and vicious. It makes the reader want to hate her initially. Then, we get to go back and hear her story and see how she got to that point and what is driving her to be so vicious. We see her in a whole new light and can’t help but have sympathy.I’ll probably get labeled a prude again, but all the sex in the first half or so started to get on my nerves a bit. I get what the author was putting across, but at some point, I really wanted more content and less bedroom. I was also a teensy bit put off by the art teacher’s intro to the story. At first, if felt like he was interrupting the plot…but as things continued to develop, it was easy to see exactly what a very pivotal purpose his character served. And, in a way, the interruption fit perfectly with his character (i.e. irritatingly persistent). ;-)Overall, this is a great take on the darker side of werewolves and especially vampires. It’s nice to step away from the young adult interpretations of these creatures now and then. This story evoked so many reactions and emotions while being satisfyingly entertaining. What more could you ask for?!? Another great read from JournalStone.
