    Chapter 1: Introduction and Background

    Welcome! And . . . Cheers!

You’ve just signed on with Relaxed Cat. Congratulations and make yourself comfortable. You’re here because you want to enjoy a litter-free home, and I’ve put together an excellent program to help you do it.

I’m Marian Pack. You’ve probably read about me on the Relaxed Cat website. I graduated with a BS in Biology and started the only toilet-training method that consistently graduates cats without accidents. I’ve also taught people all over the world how to do it with their own animals. The key to our method is overcoming the problems cats have with traditional training while letting the cats decide the pace. This means your cat can graduate accident-free and stay trained.

Meet Ramses. He joined my family in March 2010 at 12-weeks-old. At first he didn’t like toilet-training, and with several health-concerns, it was no wonder.

We paused his training many, many times to ensure his comfort while dealing with illness. Ramses graduated accident-free in early September 2010. He’s been using the toilet ever since, including a Mock Toilet for traveling.

Ramses has moved homes three times, transferring to new toilets without incident. He’s an incredible animal.

Meet Gustav, who responds to Goosy and Goo. The younger half-brother to Ramses, he shares the same father, but Gustav is more laid-back.

He joined our family in June 2011 at 11-weeks-old. Gustav is incredibly vocal, so if I was home, I knew when he was planning on using the toilet (Mmmmroww. I feel an urge…) and if he was annoyed with the changes (WRAWOOOWoowowowoweeow. What the hell is this?!).

Gustav graduated accident-free in October 2011. There’s not a sweeter animal on the planet, and he’s had no trouble adjusting to various toilets since, including a hotel stay, visits to a local school with his Mock Toilet, and two moves.

I’ve gone to great lengths to bring you the most effective methods and tricks to toilet-train your cat. It’s all condensed here in an easy and fun program.

    A QUICK WORD ABOUT TRAINING . . .

Some of what you’re going to be asked to do is encourage rote learning in your animal. Technically, rote means conditioning by repetition. In other words, your animal will be doing certain things over and over to elicit a desired response.

Of course, that seems basic and maybe not worth mentioning, but of all the strategies you’ll learn in this program, those repetitious, conditioning exercises will have the most profound effect.

You see, it’s one thing to teach an animal how to use the human toilet and quite another to teach desire to use the human toilet.

Just for example, let’s take piano playing. Your piano teacher can sit by you on the piano bench and tell you how to assume the posture and fingering, but it’s only by practicing on the bench for hours and hours that you become a good pianist. When you’re working with animals, that motivation to reach the end-goal is even more essential to training.

Learning by practice isn’t fashionable. Quick-fixes are the rage. But I believe that fool-proof training is actually easier with rote practice. It’s more powerful, and the results are infinitely better.

Conditioning is one of the oldest tools of learning, and because your cat doesn’t have another animal to imitate, repetition is your key to mastery.

The techniques I’ve selected have come from years of animal behavior study. I’ll guide you through the process. If you do what I recommend, your cat will graduate accident-free and remain accident-free.

There are so many useful things in these techniques. Trust that they are incredibly useful. It’s absolutely critical to your animal’s success that you are responsive to his subtle needs and methodical about the process. Use the techniques, and you’ll find your animal surprising you with her adaptability and intelligence. Skip techniques or steps, and you’ll find your animal resistant and having accidents.

By the way, once you dive into the material, you’ll know more than the average person about cat behavior.

Soon your house will be odor free, your animal will be more content, you won’t have to clean up animal waste, and you’ll even be saving buckets of money by skipping the litter isle in the supermarket.

Super great for you, nice for visitors to your home, and best of all, it’s great for your cat,
