Stepford SoldierZ
By Axl Abbott
A black-budget genetic engineering project to find the perfect soldier is ready for unveiling, moving out of the laboratory and into the field. But...
In Nevada, a series of laboratory accidents and monstrous results dooms the project. Unless. Unless a high-risk demonstration proves dramatic enough to pluck the program from the jaws of defeat.
At Fort Hood, Texas, the Army’s program for field testing seems innocuous enough. The Army has dedicated only obsolete aircraft and over-the-hill soldiers to the sensitive project. Obviously, if things go wrong, the powers that be can write off the old equipment and older warhorses like Colonel Tommy Vickers and Lieutenant Colonel Josh Avery. Avery threatens to retire if his boss and best friend, Vickers, can’t provide something worthwhile to entice him to stay in uniform. Vickers promises a legacy to die for.
Vickers delivers more than a little action at the Nevada test site when the experiment turns into combat action on American soil, an experiment gone so wrong Avery may have to kill his friend to survive.

"...Their faces were as the faces of men... and their teeth were as the teeth of lions."
— Revelation, Chapter 9
The Ranch
Twenty-two men and women in lab coats perched, every butt at the edge of a seat in the clamshell amphitheater. A dozen uniformed guards lined the walls and stood posts in front of the stage and at the exits. Safeties off, weapons hot, the first standing order. The second, Fire at will.
The guards shaded their posture toward the curtain, not about to turn their backs on it, every guard’s finger hovering next to the trigger of a rifle, shotgun, or pistol.
All the men — guards and lab coats alike — wore beards. The woman wore mustaches — not literally, but they were mostly mature women, and the harsh overheads cast slanted, unflattering shadows on their older, upper lips.
Except for one woman dressed in a blue blazer teetering in the spotlight at the brink of the stage, a blonde in her mid-to late-30s and pretty enough to withstand the cruel beam. She was briefing only one man, a pinstriped suit sitting down front and center, telling him tonight’s dog and pony show would prove to be a stimulating, informative, profound demonstration of the power of innovations in practical genetics.
Pinstripe yawned.
Blondie took a step back from the brink of the stage. Her eyes narrowed, glittering bright as the red silk scarf bunched at her neck. This concludes my briefing,
she said. Sir.
One long moment of silence. Then…
Pinstripe yawned again.
More silence.
The Lab Coat sitting next to the suit leaned to Pinstripe’s ear and cleared his throat.
Mister Gates. The demonstration.
Well, then.
Gates checked his watch. Get on with it.
She stalked off the stage.
Honestly, Quist, what’s with all the drama?
Gates raised the palm of a hand. I’m surprised the woman didn’t do a soft-shoe.
Blondie answered that with a slam of a door, stage left.
The house lights dimmed. A distant motor churned. The guards tensed. The curtain lifted. A pair of blue spotlights snapped on, hooking every eye to reveal a cage that took up the entire stage. Welded steel bars formed the outer layer, lined with steel mesh. Behind that, sheets of glass, more mesh, and more bars. At the center of the cage was the training apparatus of choice for terrorist training camp commanders, the horizontal ladder, actually three ladders, two of them welded vertical to the steel cage floor, the third a bridge between the vertical ladders.
A single lumpy figure dressed in black stood leaning against one of the vertical ladders, a mannequin.
You shouldn’t have, Quist.
Sir?
The overkill.
Sir?
You shouldn’t have spent so much on flourishes. Armed guards guarding cages within cages? And what’s in the cage? A terrorist scarecrow? Honestly, Quist, I’ve seen high school plays with more pizzazz. For a guy trying to persuade me not to pull the plug on this boondoggle you do underwhelm.
Quist gave a quick, tiny smile on the side of his face away from Gates.
An Attack Assembly Area
Lt. Col. Josh Avery lay back to back with his helicopter, gazing up at the night sky, waiting for the call to action. Taking off with teams of soldiers and dropping them into landing zones for training, flying off to land and wait for
