    "My maman is not waking up."

    The juvenile voice on the other end of the line was strangely calm. Could it be a joke? No. From experience, pranksters were teens, or immature adults who had had one too many and revelled in their sick idea of fun. Anyway, protocol meant investigating every single call. One instance of overlooking a genuine shout for help could mean serious consequences for the person in trouble—and instant dismissal, lawsuit most probably, and goodness knows what other problem for Élisa.

    She continued, Hello, young man, you are calling the doctors. What’s your name?

    Bastien Fabre.

    Good morning, Bastien. How old are you? Élisa’s voice took a friendlier tone in an attempt to make the child comfortable. Scaring him away could be counterproductive.

    I’m five, the boy’s voice came through, "My maman is not waking up. She’s still in bed. I nudged her, but she didn’t move. I’m really afraid."

    "Is Papa home, Bastien?"
