The Virgin and the Punk Rock Princess - Jaime Rubirosa

Chapter One: A Bottle of Tequila and a Lemon

And I was such a good kid, y'know?

I'd graduated from high school early and started going to the local community college, and in addition to my twenty-one credits I was working two jobs, as well as the occasional charity work for my church. It's not really fair to say I was happy or unhappy: I was too dang busy to have feelings, rolling from class to class to work to class to the library and so on, until I finally collapsed from exhaustion – sometimes at home, sometimes in the camper in the back of my truck, depending on how long the day had been.

Why was I in such a rush? I had a full-ride (academics, naturally), I was still living with my folks... I hadn't even declared a major yet. But at the time, it all seemed so important; I had to keep moving forward, even though I had no idea where I wanted to go. I didn't even imagine that life could be any different... not until the night I met her.

It was almost midnight, and I was more exhausted than usual. Normally I'd be able to get some studying done at work, but the library had been swamped with students cramming for their midterms, so I'd been forced to spend my time actually working, mostly cleaning up messes and explaining that no, reference materials cannot be checked out. As soon as I was ready to clock out, the network went down – which meant that, as the computer literate guy on staff, I was obliged to stick around and help get them up and running again. Top that off with a teacher canceling her evening class at the last minute and it all started to seem like it wasn't really worth it.

But hey, the younger me would have said. What else am I supposed to do? What else is there?

So I gathered up my laptop and my textbooks and my notes, and I hopped in my truck and drove to the gas station (the one across the street from Hastings) to grab some coffee. Not that I was a big fan of gas
