The First Chronicles of the Arrow's Flight - Khristy Reichman

    Chapter 1

    The Story of Bear.

Cedarray, my long-trusted council and friend, has bid me to make my accounts of how I came to be a member of the High Seat Council of Elders of the Skyfire. I am no scribe, but I shall try my best to record the accounts of the days when I was a youth. The days when I became an advisor in King Lorenthis’ court.

I, of course, came from humble beginnings as so many do. I was born to a farmer just outside the town of Riverton. Which is a well-known human village located in the foothills of the Skyfire Mount, which resides in the Riverlands. I had a glib tongue, once my father had accused me of talking the sheep out of their wool. My father, a humble farmer, had little use for such talents.

I was in my sixteenth year, during the Harvest Festival, when I was given the opportunity to go to the Riverland’s capital of Sudan. It was the first time I had ever been so far from home. The cobbled stone of the streets of Sudan were adorned in silks and flowers featuring the colors of autumn. The villagers danced about the poles, while warm spices filled my nostrils. Spiced apple mead flowed from casks as large as oxen. It was there, as I took my ease at a table with the bounty of the harvest before me, that I met Dredger. An ambassador in the king’s courts.

As I watched the maidens spin and twine the silk ribbons of autumn about the town square, he approached me. Good morrow, my young friend. A fine day for a festival. Indeed, I responded. He joined me and made small talk of the weather and of course, as any advisor would, he made inquiries of the affairs of Riverton. He told me he had once resided there. He was old, even then, come to think about it. Yet, he seemed to carry a certain air of vitality. His gray to silvery blue eyes always had a bright glint of cunning in them.

It was he who talked me into coming to Sudan and joining the Ambassador’s Guild. He agreed to take me on as his apprentice. An honor none would ever expect for a lowly farmer’s son. Yet, I at first, refused him. My life would have taken a very different turn, indeed. As you might have suspected, there was a girl who had caught my eye. Eva, the miller’s daughter.

She had long auburn hair and eyes as green as a newly sprung leaf of spring. It was during that spring that I had invited her to meet and walk in secret with the intentions of asking her to be my wife. She agreed to meet with me at the edge of the forest so that we might go together and take our lunch at the pools. She had brought with her a basket to fill with the berries that grew along the trail. It was there that she met her fate.

She must have been so engrossed in the wealth of berries that she missed the mother bear who thought her a threat to her cubs. The whole village heard her screams. I was the first to arrive on the scene. There wasn’t much of her left by the time I had arrived. I gathered
