About this ebook
She was in her Sophomore year of high school while he was a college Junior when her mother married his father. Instantly, they bécame step-siblings, but they were always in each other’s throats.
Six years passed, but she still feels that she is always a nuisance in his stepbrother’s eyes. He never, ever stops mocking her whenever they meet, he treats her only as his stepsister, acts as if she owes him her life, and he doesn’t regard her with respect as a woman. Contrary to what her friends tell her, she does not believe that any of these is a man’s way to show that he is interested in a certain woman. Then, why is she always expecting for him to somehow like her if she is convinced that he does not?
The more that she finds herself drawn to him, the harder it is for her to admit her true feelings for him.

CHAPTER 1
KAGAGALING KO LANG SA SCHOOL one afternoon. Our school was only a fifteen minute drive away from our house kaya hindi naging problema sa akin ang pag-uwi kahit at six in the evening after my last class that usually ended at five fifteen, adding up a few more minutes for going to the locker and fixing myself up at the restroom. I studied in an exclusive girls’ school. Kahit na sino ay nagsasabi na kapag nakapag-aral ka sa ganoong type of school ay nakaaangat ang pamilya mo, or in a a manner of speaking, can afford
. But honestly, we only belong to the middle class level. But yeah, my school was quite for the middle class to the upper crust.
It took me three minutes before I could reach our house na nilakad ko lang from the village guard house. Oh, I did not like taking a school service para ihatid at sundo ako—house-school, because I prefer to commute or walk which also gave me more time to go anywhere or be with my friends. Nang makapasok ako ng bahay namin, I heard people laughing while a soft music was playing in the background. Dumerecho ako sa living room to give respect to my Mom.
I found my mother talking to a man—he was a handsome, mature man, mukhang nasa mid forty-ish. My Mom looked over and greeted me as I approached her.
Oh hi, Honey!
she said, smiled at me as if I just arrived from abroad and was more than glad to see me. How was school?
It’s okay,
I answered casually. I smiled at the man who was looking at me.
Oh Honey, I want you to meet John Sevilla,
Mom introduced the man seated across from her.
Hello,
I greeted back and smiled again.
And this young man here…
my Mom pointed to the guy who was in front of my mini-component. He was playing on some music that I believe were stored in a USB,… he is John’s son.
Jericho, this is my daughter, Marielle.
I smiled at him a little and then looked away. I did not notice if he smiled back at me but I did not care.
They are going to stay for dinner, Honey,
my Mom announced as though she was expecting I would be delighted. Well, I was not. Sa totoo lang, ayoko talagang may bisita sa bahay namin lalo pa at Friday. Bakasyon na bakasyon pa naman iistorbohin ka. Or perhaps because I was an introvert. Or I just did not feel like entertaining guests at all. Whatever!
Fine
I said, and gave John
a fake grin. I forgot to bat my eyelashes. I have to go upstairs and change clothes, please excuse me.
As I went upstairs, I heard my Mom talking about me. I did not want to listen to the conversations especially if their topic was about me, I would die of embarrassment. Wala namang mapapag-usapang maganda tungkol sa akin, ah. I was not an achiever. I only did ‘Okay’ in school; I joined activities I was interested about, and the subjects I was only good at were Religion, Music, and P.E. For the rest of my subjects, well, I was able to pass them, so far.
At seven o’clock, we started preparing for dinner. I helped my Mom in the kitchen while her guests were left in the living room. I never asked her why those men were in our house or who were they. I was just not interested. Anyway, my Mom would have told me, which she did.
Finally, you’ve met John. He’s been wanting to meet you.
Iyon pala, kakilalang-kakilala ni Mommy ito, by any chance.
My Mom, si Elena Gonzales, was an Assistant to the Manager of a telecommunications company; she started working there three years after my Dad had passed away, at that time I was in the Second Grade. I’m an only child, by the way. I missed my Dad so much that no men could level up to him. Since my Mom was always at work, I was left alone with a maid. Ngayong malaki na ako, there was no need for a maid. She, instead, entrusted to me a duplicate key of the house in case I got home first from school while she was still in the office. I usually prepare dinner for the two of us except on Fridays, it’s the day she would come home three hours early than usual so I got my days off from the kitchen until Sunday.
We all settled in the dining room. At the round dining table, I sat across Jericho while my Mom and John sat across from each other. As we were dining, John kept talking about business that I could not understand, because hey! I was still in high school, what did I know about those things?
Anyway, Jericho was busy munching his food. To tell you the truth, I seldom glanced in his direction. I did not want him to think that I was eager to know him, just because he IS the son of my Mother’s special friend.
But when I got the chance to stare at him while he was eating, MY GOODNESS! He was damn good-looking and too polite. And this guy was oozing with self-assurance. I wish he would talk to me. That was the only time I ever wished for some guy to notice me after I had stared at him. MY GOODNESS!
Ah… I don’t think so. I’ll just stay here and I’ll wait up for you,
sabi ko sa Mommy ko.
Well, then, okay,
alangang sagot ni Mommy, she smiled back at everyone.
Great! I said to myself sarcastically and with an exasperated look. What was so special about him?
How about you, Jericho?
tanong naman ni John sa anak.
No, I’ll just stay here or probably go home ahead.
He was looking at my Mom, then to his father. He was surely polite.
But don’t leave, Jericho. Stay with Marielle and keep her company.
Oh no, that’s okay. I can manage by myself, can’t I, Mom?
tanong ko, hoping she would agree.
Ayoko nga talagang umalis nang ganitong oras, eh. I’m glad that Jericho will be staying with you while we’re gone. At least, I wouldn’t be much worried, right, Jericho?
No problem with me, Tita,
Tito John...! Hindi ako sanay!
An hour after dinner, my Mom and Tito John left. Matapos kong asikasuhin ang magulong bahay, kinuha ko ang cornicks—it is a roasted salted nuts, bilog at parang kulay yellow.
So there I was, left with the handsomest nanny I had ever seen. I’d like to think that he was really staring at me. Bakit ba? Story ko naman ito, di vah! Pwedeng mag-assume. Anyway, he and someone on the other line must be talking about me. I tried to listen to their conversations but I could only hear broken dialogues. He finally hang up the receiver.
"What time do you usually
