21 Outside Sales Secrets From the Queen of the Road - Diana M. Evans
Introduction
I entered the world of sales at the age of four by accompanying my father on his sales calls and now earn my living as a professional sales rep. Therefore, I feel qualified to offer experience-based advice about building a successful career as a sales rep. Business schools don’t teach selling as an art, or that if you go about it professionally you will make a good living in sales, and will establish long-lasting business relationships. Your customers will buy from you, instead of just buying the line you represent. The difference is important.
Many people who go into on-the-road sales assume that just showing up is enough to make the sale. It isn’t. Many people who go into sales think that bringing in the catalog or sample is enough to make the sale. It isn’t. The difference between being a peddler of stuff and being a salesperson is significant. Because of my father’s profession as a highly successful over-the-road salesman and my mother’s support of his profession, I learned from the inside what it takes to make that difference.
My father was a top salesman for a men’s clothing line. When I was four, I began to travel with him to some of his accounts. I had the opportunity to watch, listen, and learn how to sell from one of the best. My father was a consummate salesman, a gentleman of the old school. He was always congenial and courteous, always had a small witticism or pleasantry, was never crude or offensive, and knew his product backward and forward. He sold with style and made it an art.
Selling is an honorable profession and one of the oldest professions. In the village marketplace of Earth’s earliest cultures, merchants traded with the forebears of today’s salespeople. Unfortunately, in the stress and rush of our times, we have forgotten the little courtesies, the pleasantries, and the art inherent in our profession. However, with concerted effort and resolve, we can reclaim that art and the success it fosters. To that end, I will show you how to increase your income and expand your customer base, while maintaining your current base of happy, satisfied customers.
1 - You Can Be a Sales Rep
There are multitudes of salespeople in this country – dare I say hundreds of thousands? – And only a small percentage of them are as successful as they can be. Why? It’s because they have never had the opportunity to learn what I am going to teach you. Some of them make money because their products are in demand, some of them make money because they are on salary, and some make money because their product is trendy. Only a few make money because they are so darn good at what they do. You can be one of those few!
Don’t jump to your feet and start to sing The Sales Rep’s Anthem, or run out and buy cart loads of sales related supplies and gadgets. This is
