The Western Gardener’s Ultimate Guide - Martha Stone
Chapter 1: Why I Wrote This Book
Well-designed landscapes and gardens, especially those in the Western part of the country continue to astound me. From California to the Rocky Mountains, I have seen ornamental plants that grace the front yard landscapes of homes in subdivisions and villages, and witnessed how the play of colors and textures make a garden and a home a heavenly retreat. This fascination led me to write this book: to impart basic knowledge so that you may experience the unique rewards of western gardening and landscaping as well.
The Western Gardener’s Book contains profound information on western gardening as well as landscaping with ornamental plants. Inspired by the colors, designs and beauty invoked by an ornamental garden, this book aims to make gardening in the west not only easy but also enjoyable.
A Peek inside the Western Gardener’s Book
The Western Gardener’s Book contains useful information on western gardening and landscaping, especially for the novice gardener. Divided into six (?) chapters, this book offers information on the following:
Gardens of the West. This chapter talks about the unique characteristics and challenges of western gardening. Covering the regions and states of Pacific Northwest, California, Southwest and the Rocky Mountains, this chapter introduces how gardening in this part of this country is as an experience.
Planning your garden. Because the Western part of the country has different climate, hardiness zone and plant-growing requirements, planning the garden must be customized along these considerations. This chapter covers knowledge on season and microclimates; how to design your garden, and the tools and equipment needed for raised beds, irrigation system etc.
Landscape plans. This chapter discusses the dynamics of landscaping your garden around your home. From beautifying the front-yard to making the pedestrian walk on the entry-way appealing, to converting an unused side yard into a landscaped area, this chapter provides useful information on how a successfully-designed and maintained landscape can make your home more inviting and intimate.
Plants. Taking the central role in any landscaping and gardening project, this book listed various ornamental plants that you may use in your own garden or landscape --from shrubs to trees to flowering
