About this ebook

HE IS MORE... AND NEVER WHAT SHE CAN EVER IMAGINE

IN THE DEEP END OF THE SACRED WATERS

More and more evidence is telling Sofia that Gabriel, the man she has fallen hopelessly in love with, is more than what he can remember. She cannot put it aside anymore. He is someone supernatural.

A research team has arrived as guests in her parents' Bed and Breakfast, and Sofia and Gabriel have to come along to their exploration of the sacred cenotes in the deepness of the forest. But as they go deeper into the jungle, Gabriel begins to see familiar surroundings that trigger in him horrible memories of being sacrificed. And Sofia doesn't know how to help him.

But lost memories aren't the only things lurking in the forest. There is also danger, and it is about to ambush Sofia and Gabriel, and their guests.

EXCERPT
She was in his arms in a moment, and they were kissing when they both fell back on his bed. They kissed for a long time until she could finally speak.

“Why are you angry with me?” she asked him.

“I wasn’t angry. I was... I was scared.”

She stared at him. “Because they came from the States?” she asked what she suspected.

He nodded.

“So it wasn’t because you’re jealous of Sam? I swear, I have no interest in him rather than he makes me remember back home.”

“That worries me, too,” he agreed reluctantly. “But only because it’s a man thing, I think, to get jealous or defensive of another who wants to poach on his territory.”

She couldn’t help but smile at that. “Ah, so you remember something like that, huh?”

He finally smiled at her, and it felt so good that she kissed him again. “No, I wasn’t interested in Sam like that. You’re my man, you know.”

He was looking down at her with an unreadable expression on his handsome face, but his eyes were deep pools of green so dark it was almost black, and it made her heart race in a different reason. “When you find that you want something very badly, and I am blocking your way to it, promise me you will let me go, Sofia. Alright? I don’t want to be the man that will hold you back. I want you to have the world, even if I have to stay back for you to have it.”

“Gabriel, why are you saying such things?” she asked, even though she suspected that if she would dig deeply, she would find the answer on her own.

He smiled again and it told her he knew this, too.

    Chapter One

    WHAT HAPPENED IN Cancun?

It was all Sofia had been asked since she and Gabriel returned from the city, except now it came from her mother. The answer, though, still hadn't gotten any easier. What happened indeed? Sofia thought. She had tried, for the hundredth time, to explain. Again, her mind failed her.

We keep hearing about something crazy -- the snakes...

What took place on that day could not be explained simply. Words eluded her. Even a week after they got back -- or fled Cancun, depending on one's perspective -- Sofia could not bring herself to describe what had happened when they were there.

The day had begun innocently enough. Or sweetly enough. She and Gabriel got into the Jeep and drove the forty miles to the city. But not without detours on the way so they could kiss. They held hands as she drove. By the time they arrived in Cancun, She had been glowing in happiness and Gabriel had been frequently looking down at her with indulgence. He looked like he could give her the world. It felt like it. And she knew it was what the jealous eyes saw when she saw other women looking at them while they walked and enjoyed window shopping while she answered Gabriel's shy questions about everything that he could see.

Sofia bought the things her mother and father had put on the list she brought with her, ordered what she had to from the suppliers and bought mangoes with chili and salt for herself and Gabriel to snack on, since they planned to go to the beach.

In all the time Gabriel had lived with the Fonsecas, he had never tried to go swimming. She thought, matter of fact, that after his drowning he probably didn't know how to swim. And he himself didn't think he knew how to swim. Still, under Sofia's gentle prodding, he agreed to let her buy him a cheap swimsuit -- a scandalously scanty and electric-blue Speedo knock-off that suddenly became like an expensive designer swimming trunks once he had it on his marvelously tanned and lean body -- and try to at least float on the water. Sofia changed into her bikini, which elicited another few more minutes of heavy kissing and petting in the changing cubicle, before they entered the blue waters giggling nervously and holding hands like any other young couple.

Sofia eased Gabriel into a floating position when they reached waist-high water. And then the riptide came. A powerful current suddenly rose and swept them out to sea.

It seemed to have come from nowhere -- one minute they were floating in the calm blue waters, the next they were clinging to each other as the water churned around them and dragged them away from the shore. It was all Sofia could do to keep Gabriel's head above water -- Gabriel had gone catatonic (from the shock, Sofia supposed, in retrospect) as soon as they were in deep water. Sofia wasn't worried about herself -- she knew what to do against a riptide. But swimming while pulling more than her own body in dead weight was almost impossible.

They were drifting fast, faster than she had
