About this ebook

These 22 original poems, or perhaps in some cases, "meditations", have been composed specifically to achieve the objectives of Developmental Bibliotherapy. Both youths and adults are prompted into a meditative self-awareness that encompasses a range of emotions, feelings, and moods. Their thought content is drawn to facilitate an enhanced awareness and contemplation of the processes of personal growth and the search for meaning. In turn, the creative writing exercises that follow each poem encourages the individual to "relate" in a manner that taps into the need for interpersonal connectedness in line with the overarching developmental goals of a deepened and enlarged reality orientation and sense of responsibility.

Author

David Washington

David Washington holds a B. A. degree in Psychology and M. A. degree in Anthropology, the interface of culture and personality being the focus of his research and study. Throughout the years he has pursued a persistent interest, both as a writer and self-help enthusiast, in the efficacy of literature as an agent of personal development. His literature therapy publications are an outgrowth of this enthusiasm and an interest as a writer in art as for something more than its own sake.

The idea of giving young people poems to stimulate thinking and writing is a fundamental one in poetry therapy. However, this works best when the poems are powerful and well-written, and invoke a deep emotional response. These poems are banal, not very poetic at all. I am disappointed because I read this book to find some good ideas and prompts for poetry therapy work with young people with mental health problems. I will stick to the classics and the inspiring performance poets, like Kate Tempest

Hoisting a Whirlwind - David Washington

This is an excellent collection of poems with totally wonderful exercises at the base of each poem..The poems are artfully constructed with apparent care and this is a very appropriate tool to be use within the educational and context to promote learning and expression of ideas of ideas and feeling which is exactly what Developmental Bibliotherapy is about. Well Done.
