About this ebook

This book is about how we can improve our prison system. How we can pay for it. Which countries are doing a better job than us. Arguments for a soft on crime approach to justice and prison reform. I've tried to make the book interesting.

The criminal justice system isn't a fun subject to think about or write about. It isn't a fun subject for the reader to study or for it to fill your thoughts during your free time, either. But, it is an important subject for all of us, as voters to think about and try to make good policy. For the benefit of both those behind bars as well as the safety of society.

I think that is why so little progress has been made on this issue. We would rather close our eyes and ignore the problem, instead of tackling the issue head on. Our jails and prisons have become so ugly, that thinking about them has become disgusting to us. Almost like a modern day horror story. And for the people who have to live behind bars, for months or years, it isn't just a work of fiction. It is their daily reality.

Now, the criminal justice system is seen as a problem for a small segment of society, the people who do drugs, or drink and start fights or the people who rape or murder. But, I challenge you to go beyond that narrow definition of whose responsibility it is to question our criminal justice system and for us, as citizens, to see it as everyone's right, duty and privilege to challenge any and all human rights violations going on in our name.

The reason is that we all, consciously or unconsciously, feel some sense of fear when we leave the house here in America. To go to work, on vacation, to run errands, whether we live in a good neighborhood or a slum. Think about that for a moment. It doesn't have to be that way. And if treating prisoners better and redifining the role and power of the police can make us feel safer and happier, then let's make it a priority for government to make those changes.

Not just fear of criminals, but fear of the police and their unchecked power. And living everyday with that fear, even if we don't acknowledge it, is causing us
