Futile to call for a life, for a life

TRUE JUSTICE

AS NEWS spread of the killing of 61-year-old university lecturer Shan Dwarika, who was kidnapped a fortnight ago from an apartment he rented out, there was a deluge of not-so-hushed calls for the reinstatement of the death penalty.

The return of capital punishment was also proposed as a sure-fire way to reduce the rampant rise in serious crime which has come to be regarded as an acceptable means of resolving social, political and even domestic conflicts.
