Chapter Ten: Common Terms
Chapter One: Introduction
Peacocks! Can you raise them in your own home? The question is always asked with surprise and while I don’t recommend peacocks and peafowl for an apartment, if you have an adequate yard, the answer is always yes.
The reason why I started with a question is to highlight the uncertainty that has probably brought you to this book. You may be interested in having a peacock but you may not be sure if, or even how, to go about owning one. In one simple paragraph, I have answered at least one of your questions and the rest will be answered throughout this guide.
Although the term peacock is applied to a single bird, there are several terms that anyone interested in raising peafowl should be familiar with. One, peacock identifies the brilliant blue or green birds that we commonly know. Two, peafowl refers to any type of pea species or variety and includes both males and females. Three, peahens are the females in the peafowl species.
The peacock is a beautiful creature and it is one that has captured the hearts and imaginations of people around the world. In fact, the peacock has been revered for millennia and even the Roman goddess Juno was linked to the bird. In her story, her chariot was drawn, not by horses, but by splendid peacocks, their colours flashing and eyes shining.
Today, many people can recall childhood memories of trips to zoos, and in those memories, the peacock, walking gracefully across the green or perching on a fence, is a prominent feature.
I have lost count of the number of peacocks spied roaming around a zoo but for many years, I thought they were simply a bird you found there. I didn’t think that I would be able to bring my own home to grace my property.
Of course, the first step in any type of journey is always discovering where you want to start and after researching peacocks, I realized that I could bring them into my own home.
In addition, I realized that there was not a lot of information available to fans of the beautiful birds – information like what to feed your birds, how to house them properly in all climates and how to ensure that your next generation of peafowl are healthier than your first. All of that information was missing for new enthusiasts to these creatures.
It was that lack of information that influenced me to take my own understanding of peacocks and peafowl and turn it into an informative book that will answer all of your questions. Throughout this book, I have covered how to find the best breeder for your starting birds to how to bring those birds home.
This book covers feeding, daily care, grooming, socializing and finally nesting and breeding your birds. It is a complete guide and is the only resource that you will need to successfully raise your own peafowl. This book also looks at all of the species of peafowl you can raise.
To say that owning your own peafowl or peacock is a joy is quite an understatement. There is often a sense of wildness to a peacock and the sound of its Yeehaa call, made famous in many movies, is a welcomed addition to any enthusiast’s yard.
The brilliant plumage and amazing temperament of these birds will inspire not only your appreciation for their beauty but also an appreciation for their unique characteristics.
Whilst many feel that peacocks are more of an exotic accessory for your home, they are actually a very companionable bird. They enjoy human company and while they are not as attentive as a dog, they will interact with the people who care for them.
In fact, raising peafowl and peacocks can be a very rewarding experience simply because of how amazing and
