Chapter 1

Liz’s perfectly shaped eyebrows furrowed as she scowled at her laptop over the frames of her designer reading glasses. She wasn’t sure why she even bothered with them, her glasses that is. Except for the fact that she’d carefully chosen the black tortoise shell design to set off the deep blue hue of her eyes, she didn’t see the reason for them. She could see perfectly fine. As the glasses slid down her nose, she squinted at the screen, trying make out the content of the email. 

Dammit! 

She yanked off the glasses and tossed them on her desk and then sat back into her cozy leather office chair with a sigh. After rubbing her eyes, she ran her hands through her shiny, straight black hair. Deciding the long locks were nuisance, she sat up, opened her desk drawer, and fished out a hair tie. She stood up and headed over to her closed office door where there was a full length mirror.

As she strategically pulled up her hair, she made sure the rest of her was in order as well. She’d be turning forty this year, but she didn’t look a day past thirty. Her rigorous daily gym routine combined with her newfound love for a vegetarian diet had done nothing short of stopping that nasty thing called aging. She’d always had a natural beauty about her, but then she’d always also been awkward and introverted as well. And she wasn’t the greatest at pulling everything together. 

Brushing off some lint from her pin-striped pants, Liz gave herself one last look-over. Satisfied, she walked back over to her desk just as her computer gave off the sound of another email being delivered to her inbox. 

Sitting down, she glanced over at her glasses, wrinkled her nose at them as if she were getting the upper hand in an argument about whether or not she should put them back on. As she squinted again at the screen and clicked on the email, it only took reading a few words before she slammed her laptop closed in disgust. Frustrated, she grabbed the laptop from her desk as she stood and headed for the door. 

Storming down the short hallway out into the small reception area, Liz’s secretary and best friend, Dawn, was working on something at her desktop computer with the sounds of classic rock playing quietly from a nearby speaker. 

I need a better spam blocker! Liz nearly yelled, making Dawn jump in her chair at the interruption of silence. 

Look who’s finally come out of her dungeon of an office to join the land of the living. Hand it over.  Dawn reached for Liz’s laptop, which she graciously gave her. What was it this time, some perv with a foot fetish? Or let’s see…

I don’t want to talk about it. Just make it so no more of those types of emails can get through. I run a dating service, not some sort of damn free-for-all sex service for the desperate.
