    An Early Rise

    The woman was old, and her matted hair spoke of the roughness of her life; the Moors were no place for an old woman – as she searched for kindling, her joints reminded her of it! If it were nearer March, she could have worn less, given her skin some air!

    The Winter had been kinder to her than most, liberating the fields with just a sprinklin’ – she could still remember the Freeze the year before Pa went: had she ever been that young…?

    She could recall kindness, a promise kept, although sometimes not fully meant, but a love nonetheless, which could never be returned by Stone nor Acres..! When he had passed, her tears numbered weeks, and now and again she’d still have a sniffle, ‘though wether it ‘twas just the Wind whining, NONE could tell..!

    The years had deadened her feelings, the work of paying the Rent making the whole feeling of grief seem pointless, somehow just another pile of dead wood; when the fire stopped lighting, the place would finally go Cold – she’d never wished it, but in absence of Sons…?

    The wind howled buffeting her, and tattling the windows of the Cottage nearby - joints too worn, they would say when HER time came. She shivered, a rasp escaping her throat: grumbling,
