    Chapter1

The night was like black velvet, it shimmered in the starlight. The air seemed to have a tingle invading it as if it was waiting for something to happen. I sighed and checked my phone, there was no service here. I should have known. Driving outside of Belen had a dead zone.  Nervous, I climbed out of my little Dodge Neon on the side of the highway. Popping the trunk I pulled out the spare tire and jack that I kept behind the car. It didn’t take me long to jack up the passenger side of my hunter green car that I had worked hard to pay for. I know how to change a tire, and my oil, and do minor car repairs, but that doesn’t mean I like to do them, OK.  This was upsetting. First my sex life takes a dive, then I get a flat tire in the middle of no where on the side of a dark highway. Nothing is going right at the moment!

The headlights were incredibly bright as they pulled up behind me with their hazards on. This was a fairly deserted stretch of road and I was surprised that anyone passed me. I squinted as a man and woman climbed out of the car. They looked friendly enough so I stood to meet them, the tire iron still in my hand. My father had instilled a safety first mentality into me before he died, so I liked the heavy feel of a makeshift weapon in my hand.

Do you need help young lady? The man asked, his dark eyes shimmered in the darkness, a strange red color that I had only seen in animal eyes. He seemed to be smiling. His companion was grinning as well, her teeth glinting in the moonlight. I couldn’t see many details as they had not yet advanced in front of the headlights of their car.

The hazards were making every one of my movements look like stop action photography as I tried to shield my eyes to get a better view. I could feel the hair on the back of my neck stand up and realized that these people weren’t as benign as they had originally seemed. My senses felt heightened as I gripped my weapon tighter. No, I think I’m OK but thanks. I responded tersely and began to turn back to my car.

Are you sure? I could help you out, no problem.

Like I said, I’m fine. I gripped the weapon in my hand.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of movement. I whirled around and the man was right on top of me. He gripped my upper arms with inhuman strength and I could feel the bruises start to form under my dark skin. I struggled against him, but it seemed useless. Tell me your name girl. He hissed at me, extraordinarily long canines glinting brightly in the headlights. He had moved impossibly fast to grab me.

I knew better than to show fear, which is what he wanted to see, so I did my best to keep the fear from choking my voice. None of your God-Damned business. I spat the words at him and he recoiled a bit releasing my arms. As he raised his strong arm to strike me I raised my weapon and struck as quickly as I could. When I caught his ribs under my blow I did not hear any cracking. With the strength of my hit I should have heard some ribs break. I should have hurt him. I swung wildly for a moment out of fear and missed with both swings. My opponent backed off as I heard a single step behind me. It was the girl. I had lost track of her, Dad would have killed me for forgetting about one of my opponents.

I turned to put my back against the car. I needed to keep them from getting behind me. I was already flanked and I knew that this was going to be one hell of a fight. Back off! I shouted. As my two attackers advanced I pulled my head together and began screaming Fire as loud as I could, hoping someone nearby would hear and come to my aid. It didn’t seem to be working so I tossed the tire iron and caught it where the crowbar side was facing toward my assailants.

The man turned to his companion and smiled at her. Catherine, are you enjoying playing with your food?

She laughed in response. She will make a fine dinner. I readied myself for an attack, but the dark haired attackers seemed to be enjoying their little conversation. I used the time to observe the situation and quickly drew some conclusions about them. They must be on drugs, because even after that blow the man was walking and interacting fine. The pair looked like they could be related because their features were very similar. The looked to be about my age, so in their early 20’s. They had the angular look of hungry wolves on the hunt for the first time in weeks. It was fierce and intelligent with a frightening necessity hiding behind their eyes.

He turned to speak to the one named Catherine once again. As he opened his mouth to speak I lunged with all my strength and plunged my tire iron into his chest he dropped to the ground, appearing to be dead.

A screech entered my ears as he fell to the ground. YOU BITCH! she flew towards me and raked her hands across my face. I felt the burning of claws scratching my skin. If you can imagine the burning sensation of a cat attacking you and multiply it by a hundred, you might get close to the pain that I felt at the attack. THEODORE! she screamed as she grabbed the weapon from my hand and wrenched it from his chest. I thought it was odd that no blood poured from the wound. I turned to face her as she dropped the make-shift weapon to the ground and fell to her knees beside her brother.

With her attention diverted I grabbed the weapon intent on defending myself against her vengeful strikes. What I saw however was more terrifying than anything I could imagine. Theodore was rising from the ground with a manic smile. Now, now Catherine. He stared at me as he spoke. I am recovered. Let us not keep dinner waiting.

    She grinned. Let us feast.

Get away! I tried to keep my voice level and unafraid.

He cocked his head. I smell fear, but she does not show it. This one is special. She must be the one.

Yes, let’s finish this and move on. I want to hunt more tonight.

I waited for the attack. When she rushed towards me I jabbed with my tire iron again. I missed but was able to recover quickly. I suffered for my mistake however as a felt a rib crack under the powerful fist of her brother. The pain made me see red and I struck again. I knew my life depended on the blow. My weapon pierced her flesh and I drove it straight into her heart. She began to fall, but my earlier experience I had a feeling she wasn’t going to stay down long. I yanked my weapon from her chest and stabbed at Theodore. He dodged artfully and smiled like he was merely playing with me. You already know that doesn’t work. He laughed at me as he spoke and I already saw his sister beginning to move. Tell me girl, is your name Wyndolyn? Those words shook me to my core. It frightened me to know that this was not a random attack. This was a purposeful strike meant just for me. They were targeting me, and I had know idea why.

Do you smell the fear. It is growing. Catherine stated as she rose from the ground. I was getting the idea that they could have killed me when this started and they were just toying with me.

What I saw next nearly made me faint. A brief glimpse of a shadow in the darkness behind them. Theodore saw my glance and turned to look. What he saw made his eyes widen and I took the advantage. I brought the weapon up again and struck into the same wound. As he was falling to the ground a blur burst into the light and tackled Catherine. I watched her fall and saw the fence post sticking out of her chest. It looked like it had been forced through her back and was sticking out of her chest. I left my weapon in the man as I turned to size up my new opponent. Anyone that could take down one of these druggies so quickly had to be much more dangerous than them.

The new attacker looked at me with an almost serene calm. You have to get out of here. Move please. The manners shocked me so much I complied with his request. With seemingly blinding speed he changed my tire and tightened the lug nuts without the tire iron. He then lowered the jack, again with no tire iron and moved the supplies back into my trunk. As he closed the trunk he said, Get in. When I just stood there in shock and pain from my fight he picked me up and placed me in the passenger seat. With a strange gentle motion he brushed my tight curls away from my face and buckled my seat belt. Somehow during this ordeal he had unhooked my car keys from my belt loop. I didn’t realize they were gone until he started the car while sitting in the driver’s seat. Let’s get you someplace safe.

    Chapter2

He drove and drove for what seemed like hours, but the moon had barely moved by the time we arrived at a small hotel on the outskirts of town. I looked at the clock and realized that it was only nine o’clock. The sky had barely darkened and yet it seemed like it had been all night. I was tired and afraid. With a strange grace he opened my door and told me to unbuckle my seat belt. After I complied with his soft-spoken demand he swept me into his arms again. He carried me through the parking lot and up to the second floor of the motel. Holding me on his forearms he deftly unlocked the door. I realized that I must not have been the only woman he had done this to. I wasn’t a fool, and was going to bide my time until I could escape. He lay me on the bed and removed my shirt purposefully. I covered myself with my arms as he looked at the damage to my rib cage. He then sniffed the air as he looked at the scratches on my cheek. He snarled a bit then seemed to regain control of his senses. I didn’t see the washcloth in his hand until I felt its cool wetness touch my cheek. This man was almost tender with me; however his matter of fact manner was perturbing. He dabbed the blood off my cheek. After the wound was cleaned with water he sniffed the cloth and licked a bit of blood off it. I gagged when I saw that. Suddenly there was a trash can next to me as I vomited the stress from the night away. When I was done I stumbled into the bathroom to clean myself off. The shower looked so inviting. I saw my savior standing in the doorway watching me intensely. As I looked in the mirror I realized what a mess I was. My hair was tangled so much I thought it would take me hours to comb through. My skin was covered in blood and sweat. A tear rolled down my face as I stared at my unkempt reflection.

This strange man just kept staring at me. Wyndolyn... He didn’t seem to have the right words as the tears rolled down my face in an undying flood.

What is going on? The despair ripped through my flesh and exploded in the bathroom. The shock had finally worn off and a mass of emotions. I rushed my savior with my fists curled and began to punch as hard as I could at his chest. He just stood there looking at me and let me vent my rage upon him. He was unmoved by my blows. He just stood there, a statue in the dim light from the bathroom as I swung and swung and swung. He looked at me quixotically as I slumped onto the floor continuing to sob and shake in a release of fear. He let me cry and just watched me. He didn’t move or say a word during the entire encounter.

When I managed to pull myself together I rose to face him. He was a few inches taller than me and seemed to be around my age. His short blond hair was shining under the artificial light in the room. His eyes locked on to mine and I just thought that they were the most intense and hypnotic blue that I had ever seen. He was simply a magnificent specimen of manhood, not that I was interested in that sort of thing. I forced myself to pull out of his eyes and lowered my gaze. I was confronted by a tightly sculpted body that was thrown haphazardly into a pair of jeans and a basic black t-shirt. His skin was pale and it was obvious that he had not seen much sun. The letterman jacket that draped his form told of an athlete. His presence confused me because he was not the type of man that ever would have noticed me. He seemed like the polar opposite of my dark chocolate skin and tight curls. My brown eyes would never have competed with his baby blues. All of my insecurities rushed to the surface of my mind and I realized that I was only wearing my jeans and my pink bra. I reflexively covered myself from his gaze that seemed to be drinking in my form. In an odd thought I was suddenly glad I had worn that pink lacy bra that Cecilia had made me buy for myself. I would never have thought to buy something like that for myself. Of course it didn’t help that my sex life had been pretty much non-existent since I broke it off with Cole.

    You’re pretty tough.

After all of that, that’s all you can say? I started to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

You did good? He looked confused, as if it was all that was needed.

I burst out laughing as he said it. It was crazy. Tears began streaming down my face again, but this time out of the pure hilarity of the moment. He looked concerned for my welfare. As he stared at me in confusion I just continued laughing and laughing. Nothing like tonight had ever happened to me before, and I continued to go through these emotional outbursts. I struggled to regain my self control.

He touched me. His cool skin was electric on my cheek and I drew my breath in as he swept my hair from my face. Suddenly his eyes drew me in again and I found myself completely still waiting for him to say something. I was under his spell. Part of me loved it, and another part a deeper more animal part of me told me to resist. To fight his control. I wrenched my eyes away from his as he muttered an apology. There are not many women who have the control, the strength that you have. It is utterly amazing Wyndolyn . You are so much like... He left his thoughts to trail off into nothingness.

I finally realized that he had called me by my name. How do you know my name? The fear welled up in me again. First the two that had attacked me knew my name, and now this man.

I... guessed. He responded in a weak attempt to cover his slip.

Nuh-uh, I confronted, There is no way you guessed my name. I want to know how you know my name.

Fine, he sighed. I knew your father before he passed. He told me about you before he died. We... worked together on a couple of jobs.

It seemed fishy, but I didn’t think it was completely a lie. It also was very clear that he was not going to expound more on the subject so I left it at that for a moment. Are you planning to hurt me? I asked.

    No.

Are you planning to eat me?

His eyes twinkled and for the first time since I met this strange man I saw him smile a bit. No. His voice was much lighter than it had been before.

    Who are you?

My name is Alistair. He stated it like it was a fact, and in a flash his smirk disappeared.

Alistair... I like that name. It suits you. I don’t know what made me say that, but I knew I needed to say something before I lost control again.  Are you kidnapping me? It was an inane question; I knew it immediately after I said it.

Not really, I just can’t let you leave until sunrise.

    Why?

Because I don’t believe that Theodore and Catherine are dead. It was scarily matter of fact.

Why don’t you think they are dead?

I’m sure they had a minion to pull the stakes out of their hearts before sunrise.

    Why would that matter?

Silently, he took my hand and led me to the single chair in the room. Sit down.

No, I resolutely stood before him. Hopefully I looked defiant enough to make him back down.

Fine, He shrugged at me. They are vampires.

I sat in shock. You have to be kidding me?

    I wish I was Wyndolyn.

Would you stop calling me that! I hated my name and I had heard it one to many times for one night.

What would you prefer to be called?

    Wyn

Certainly. Wyn, because that is what you do?

I laughed a bit, but it  wasn’t the first time someone had said something like that to me. It’s good to keep up appearances. Suddenly my mind slipped back to the earlier conversation. Vampires don’t exist. I stated. Everything in life, science, and school had instilled that in me.

You were never told? He appeared to be asking himself rather than speaking to me. How could they never tell you.?

I answered anyway. Tell me what?

Nothing... Wyn. He seemed to enjoy saying my nickname. Let’s not worry about that right now. For now we should get you cleaned up. Can you stand long enough to shower or would you like me to help you?

I... um... uh. The offer was tempting and I was almost willing to accept. I was stuttering as he started to smile and I noticed the brilliant white of his teeth. I think I can stand. That smile frightened me a bit. I could feel the adrenaline of the earlier encounter starting to fade and the pain in my side started to throb. I knew that my ribs were broken. I tried to stand again and immediately sat back down. Maybe not. I sagged in the chair, half exhausted, half embarrassed and looked again at my savior/captor.

    Chapter3

Alistair lifted me from the chair and carried me in his arms to place me on the bed. Deftly he removed my remaining clothes. I lay in the light from the bathroom naked and tried to cover myself. The pain that associated that movement made me gasp. That concerned look crossed his face again. He crossed the room and entered the bathroom. I could hear the water running as he walked back into the room. He picked his way through the room toward the bed that I was laying on. He sat on the bed as I could see the steam begin to fill the room. I didn’t know what to say at this moment, it seemed so strange to me so I remained silent as his eyes traveled over my body, hungrily taking in the sight of me.

The moment was interrupted by my cell phone ringing in my pants. Can you bring me my phone? I asked gently. Without a word he crossed the room and brought it to me. Never once did he remove his eyes from my body.

It was my mother. I informed her what had happened, leaving out the fact that I was attacked by vampires or that I was laying on the bed with a broken rib, naked with a strange man sitting next to me. Strangely my mother asked to speak to the man that saved me. Hello Eva he said as he picked up the phone. I could hear muffled talking from my mother. My name is Alistair. He stated to her. I worked with your husband. Some more talking burst through the phone. Mom was getting louder, I could almost make out what she was saying. Calmly he responded to her. It was the Rom twins. I have her, Wyn is safe. I’m going to keep her with me until sunrise. My mother’s voice sounded calmer as she spoke again. Only minorly. She has a broken rib and some scratches on her face. If you call Anna she should be able to vouch for me. I will bring her home tomorrow afternoon as soon as she recovers. More shouting on the phone. I made out the word doctor in my mother’s voice. In a hiss he responded. You know it isn’t safe for her to go out until sunrise. I will keep her safe until then. The call was disconnected soon after.

He turned back to me. Your mother says she loves you. That smirk I had seen a glimpse of earlier returned as he said it. I knew it was meant to be some sort of joke, but with the pain starting to infiltrate my senses, I just didn’t get it. I merely moaned in response.

His smirk faded and the concern overtook his features again. Does it hurt that badly? He asked.

Yeah it hurts like a bitch. The sarcasm dripped through my words.

    Let me help you.

    How?

    Just trust me.

I started to laugh, but the pain made me stop as soon as I started. Do what you have to.

He walked into the bathroom. I heard the water stop running. Steam started to clear as he walked back into the room and removed his letterman jacket. His arms were magnificent, but the pain I was in kept me from enjoying the sight as much as I should have. He lay down next to me and scooted as close to me as possible. All of a sudden I became even more aware of my nakedness as his body touched mine. With a gentle touch he brushed my hair away from my scratches. This isn’t going to take care of everything, but it should help lessen the pain.

What are you going to do?

It’s hard to explain. Was his breathless response as he lowered his face to mine. I was certain he was going to kiss me. I was surprised by the move and didn’t respond. Instead of kissing me I could feel him kissing my cheek, and then soft and gentle he licked it. He licked me. That snapped me right out of the reverie I was in. I pushed at him and he allowed me to move him away. What the hell! I shouted at him.

I’m trying to help. It was an eerily calm response.

    You licked me!

    Yes.

YOU LICKED ME! I was screaming now. I didn’t understand what was going on, but I did know this strange man had me naked in a bed and was licking my cheek.

Yes, he sighed and looked at me. Please calm down, I can explain. I reigned in my emotions and looked at him. I was still upset and shaking.

You see, there are some things that science cannot explain yet.

What does science have to do with you licking me? I managed not to shout, but I am absolutely sure the freak-out was sounding in my voice.

Calm down. You see, not everyone in the world is human. There are some like me, and the other’s you so valiantly fought tonight that are special.

    Vampires. I answered sarcastically.

    Yes, I am a vampire.

I guess I should have worked that one out much earlier.

Are you going to eat me? I half joked.

The smirk reappeared on his face like I just mentioned an inside joke. His answer changed this time. Only if you ask very nicely. I shut up at that quip. I had no way to respond and I could feel the blood rush to my face. I’m not going to suck your blood. I don’t do that any more. I’ve seen the light, so to speak. He paused to let me gather myself. A vampire is not all about sucking the blood. The reason we do not get caught as much is because our saliva can help the human body recover from the damage we cause. It won’t completely heal you, but it could help you feel better and get back on your feet faster. He let me absorb this knowledge. Now will you let me continue?

    Continue... licking me?

Yes. He moved in to continue and I did not resist him. He licked my wounds again. The pain was fading in my cheek and oddly enough in my side as well. He was right. I was feeling better.

Does my mother know that you are a vampire?

No, I don’t want to risk leaving her house to rescue you. It’s safer for her to stay home.

Why are they trying to kill me? Theodore and Catherine, I mean.

I can’t say. His gaze drifted away for a moment.

    Chapter4

He picked me up again. Careful not to bump me on the doorway he carried me into the bathroom and placed me gently in the bathtub. The water was still very warm and it felt nice on my naked body. He was examining me again as he picked up another washcloth. He rubbed a bar of soap on the cloth and began to scrub my body.

You do know that I can wash myself.

I don’t mind, do you? He smiled a little at me while I’m sure I looked confused. Anyway, it’s been a long time since I’ve been in the presence of a beautiful naked woman. I forgot how much I enjoyed this. I stammered at him, nervous and unable to respond. Leaned down and whispered in my ear. I still have some feelings. The seriousness returned to his face, although I will stop if you wish me to.

I wasn’t sure how to respond, but his gentle scrubbing felt really nice so I chose not to respond. He continued to wash my body as the soreness soaked away in a hot bath. It took me a few moments to realize that I could smell sandalwood in the coming from the bath. It was a wonderful smell. I closed my eyes and enjoyed his hands running over my body. It was an erotic feeling that I hadn’t had before. With Cole it had always been rather plain and concerned with his needs; Alistair it seems was a bit more kindly in his caresses than my ex-boyfriend. Something about this man just made me trust him.

When my bath was over, I felt much better. I had almost my full range of motion back and the vampire handed me a bathrobe. My clothes were ripped up and dirty. In the morning I’ll take you to the hospital.

But you’re a vampire. I joked. You can’t go out in the sun.

He grunted in response. We can, we just don’t like to. It hurts our eyes and we loose most of our abilities, so you should be safe in the morning. Ted and Cathy shouldn’t give you any trouble during the day. You can actually kill them.

    How

By driving something through their heart. He explained, it has to be in their heart during the day. He stopped and let me soak in the information. They won’t attack you during the day.

    Are you sure?

    Yes.

Why would you want to go out in the sun to take me to the hospital? I was curious.

Because I need to make sure that you are safe.

    Why.

You are starting to sound like a young child. All this why, can’t you just lay back and get some rest.

I stared at him in disbelief, did he actually just call me a child. I couldn’t believe it. What the hell, why would you say that?

Because it’s the truth. He left it at that as if that explained everything.

This man was so frustrating, but he was really nice on the eyes. I stopped talking and just looked at him. I could stare at him all day. He settled into the chair for the first time tonight and looked at me and again I felt myself drawn into his gaze. Didn’t I read something somewhere about vampires having hypnotic vision. Ugh.

What’s wrong, are you hurting more? He stood up and moved toward me.

No, no, it’s not that. I didn’t want him to know I might actually be starting to believe him. So many incredible things had happened tonight it was mind-boggling. People had gotten up after someone had died and this man had licked my wounds and healed them. I looked in the mirror; you couldn’t even tell my face had been scratched. My ribs were feeling much better, but it still wasn’t a hundred percent. I pulled the robe off for a moment to examine my wound. It didn’t even look too bad. I lifted my left arm above my wound and felt that I could lift it to shoulder height without any pain. I was impressed by his licks. I let my mind wander a bit and thought about what his kisses could do. I examined my reflection in the mirror and wondered what he saw in me that could make him look at me that way. I haven’t had my hair straightened or teased like most girls. I didn’t wear make-up and my skin was so dark. I wasn’t the typical version of beautiful. I knew I had my good points but I wasn’t model worthy by any stretch, and the man in the bedroom definitely was.

Do you need help in there? He asked me after I had been musing for a few minutes alone in the bathroom. I turned to answer
