Cydwybod mewn Carchar
Hanes achos y gwrthwynebydd cydwybodol, y Parchedig Benjamin Meyrick
Cyflwyniad
Yn lle bod yn y pulpud yr wyf yn y carchar.
Dyma eiriau dirdynnol Benjamin Meyrick - yr unig weinidog ordeiniedig yng Nghymru i'w garcharu fel gwrthwynebydd cydwybodol yn ystod y Rhyfel Mawr. Ysgrifennu llythyr at ei gyfaill a'i gefnogwr, E. K. Jones, gweinidog efo’r Bedyddwyr yng Nghefnmawr, Wrecsam, yr oedd Meyrick ar y pryd a hynny pan oedd yn garcharor yn y 'guard room' yng ngwersyll milwrol Litherland, ger Lerpwl, yn ystod haf 1917.
Roedd Meyrick wedi ei garcharu am iddo fod yn 'absennol heb ganiatâd' o'r fyddin. Fel gwrthwynebydd cydwybodol nid oedd am berthyn i'r fyddin o gwbl ac fel gweinidog yr Efengyl byddem wedi disgwyl y byddai, fel pob gweinidog arall yn y cyfnod, wedi ei esgeuluso o unrhyw ddyletswydd filwrol yn ystod y Rhyfel.
Sut felly y cafodd y Parchedig Ben Meyrick ei ddedfrydu i ddwy flynedd o garchar efo llafur caled? Bwriad y traethawd yw ceisio ateb y cwestiwn hwn.
Ond wrth i'r stori ddatblygu gwelwn yma fwy na hanes un dyn; gwelwn hefyd gyflwr yr enwadau anghydffurfiol Cymreig a sut y bu iddynt gefnu mor ymddangosiadol rwydd ar eu cydwybod ymneilltuol. Oherwydd er bod Meyrick wedi derbyn cefnogaeth i'w safiad, y gwir yw mai lleiafrif bychan oedd a
