Introduction
Master Cat; or, The Booted Cat,
better known as Puss in Boots,
is a European fairy tale first written down by Italian author Giovanni Francesco Straparola in the 16th century. Since then the tale has been told and retold many times, and the character of the cat has appeared in modern stories as well as classics, including an appearance in the ballet The Sleeping Beauty
by the composer Tchaikovsky. It is also one of the rare stories in literature where a cat is a helpful and kind creature.
As you read this story YOU are the master cat, and the choices you make will determine whether your tale ends up happily ever after. Good luck!
The Beginning
About five years ago your master, a miller, brought you to his house, a small mill. He had three sons, but his wife had died. The two older sons have never much cared for you, but the youngest, who is now about 18 years old, has always been kind to you.
