The stone massif came to a dramatic drop. It ran out to a sharp airy edge, curved in on itself and plunged down in colossal steps of stacked cliffs and crooked ravines to a dark field of smashed rocks. Ancient forces had gouged a massive block out of the mountainside and crushed it into crumbs that covered the lower grounds as far the icy lakes.
A few barren knolls broke through the rocky rubble at the far end of the field. Their little bumpy forms rose as islands of solid rock in a sea of shattered stone.
The skinny trace of a wagon trail weaved around the smaller knolls and made for the biggest one. After a final, reversing turn, the trail ran into a large hole, dug into the side of the knoll. The opening bore the distinct rough and rounded shape of a mine.
You can see why they thought it was safe,
said the old miner, standing by the top of the knoll. He wore a furry cap with sheepskin flaps, which sometimes flopped in the cold gusts. It’s too flat for snowslides down here. But no one thought of the slopes up there, beyond the edge, where you don’t see them.
He gazed up at the immense cliffs looming over the field. Even if we had seen the snow it wouldn't have mattered.
