A WHITE WORLD
CAST YOUR MIND BACK to February 2020: the very early days of the pandemic, when we had no idea of the world we were about to emerge into.
I’d gone to bed with a sense of excitement, like a child on Christmas Eve. The weather reports were looking favourable: the 528 line on the synoptic charts, which is a good indication of the atmosphere chilling significantly, was dropping south across the country. First light arrived. I threw open the blinds and there it was: Cadair Idris, swathed in a blanket of snow clouds.
Cadair Idris is where, according to the Welsh collection of fables known as , Idris Gawr the giant sat. Possibly also known as Idris ap Gwyddno (Idris son of Gwyddno), he is reputed to have been so tall he could sit on the top and study the stars, while surveying his whole kingdom. I have to agree that on a clear night Cadair Idris is one of the best viewpoints for a glimpse into our incredible galaxy. I’ve spent many a night watching the Llwybr Llaethog – the Milky Way – arc its way across our skies.
