The little red flake skipped and skidded on the high wind. Two crossed sticks held the cloth out to four firm corners, letting it catch every passing gust and climb to ever greater heights. The kite would have sailed into the wide blue yonder if not for the string, tugging it to a hovering standstill, way up in the windy sky.

The kite-flier held the emptied spool in a flat two-handed grip, as she had no more line to give.

Now bring me a carrier-cloud.

Her friend raised a limp hand from where she lay in the grass, and wiggled three fingers at the sky.
