    Prologue….

    1 year earlier

Kayla grumbled in annoyance as she walked down the street toward Kim’s Quick-Mart, pissed that her older sisters were making her go to the store to check their lottery tickets. She had barely made it into the house before her older sister Paige was shoving the tickets in her hands and herding her back out.

She and her six sisters had been playing the lottery for the past few years, each adding a $1 into the pool, trying to play as many numbers as they could. So far, the most they had won was $600 which they split evenly.

Her older sister Amber was at the computer and was refusing to look up the numbers, too busy doing her report for school. Her twin Arlene was lying on the couch flipping through channels and had missed the showing when the numbers were drawn.

When she walked into the store she was hit with a foul smell and pulled her shirt up covering her mouth and nose to help negate the smell. It always smelt strongly of incense and garlic here. The two owners were a Chinese man and his wife who was Chinese.

    Talk about odd couples.

She and her sisters, all sets of twins except for her second older set of sisters who were triplets all had keen senses of smell, hearing, and sight since they were small children. They were also pretty strong, able to go to the gym and lift hundreds of pounds without breaking a sweat. They were all around 5’6 give or take an inch, dark hair, pale honey toned skin, with eyes ranging from amber, pale green, or a blend of both, each taking after their mother. It was almost like she spit them out, each almost perfect clones of her, well except for herself. She was a mirror image, her oldest sister Paige coming in a strong second.

They didn’t know why they were so different, but knew it wasn’t normal and didn’t ask anyone either. They were very protective of each other since their parents had died in an auto accident when she was a child. Her older sister Page and Pilar who were 18 at the time, fought the courts for custody of them. It was lucky for them that they had both just graduated high school the month before the accident.

She and her twin sister Kember had been 10, and her sisters Amber, Ailine, and Arlene had been 13, scared little girls with no other family to turn to had clung to one another. Eleven years later they were still living together in a 4-bedroom apartment paying a fortune in bills, but happy to be together.

Hello, welcome to Kim’s Quick-Mart. The owner said and she smiled, nodding her head as she headed to the register.

Hey Kayla. How was work? Nisha, the wife and second owner of the store asked, giving her a quick hug.

It was fine, but tiresome. But you know how I love working with animals. I had a surgery earlier in the day. It was 3 hours but it was a success.

She was a veterinary Technologist and worked at a large animal hospital in their surgery department as well as the clinic assisting the veterinarian with all types of issues. It ranged from teeth cleaning, clipping nails, checkups, to taking samples to the labs. She was a jack of all trades and loved it. It made her days interesting, though mostly she worked in surgery.

I am so proud that you managed to get your bachelors degree in veterinary medicine. To be able to graduate high school at 16, and complete your Vet Tech degree a year early as well, your parents would be proud. She finished just as someone called out for help, looking for an item and she took her leave to assist the customer.

It was true that she did graduate early, skipping two grades in elementary school and taking extra classes in high school. She was able to graduate a semester early from high school and immediately went to University of Tennessee in Knoxville on a full academic scholarship and her sisters packed up and moved with her from Sevierville, which was a lot smaller than Knoxville.

Kayla came back to the present and walked up to the counter, waiting behind a couple and a young man in baggy paints and stained t-shirt. He smelled of sweat and pot, the smell making her slightly dizzy.

The couple purchased some chips and drinks, had their lottery ticket checked, but obviously didn’t win and exited the store. The man in front of her placed his items on the counter, when Lou Kim, the owner’s son rang him up he started digging in his pockets and cursed when he couldn’t find his money right away.

You can go ahead of me. I’m trying to find my money. The man said, digging in his back pocket now.

Hell, if he was looking that hard, he obviously didn’t have any money. Lou better watch to make sure he didn’t steal anything.

Hey Kayla. I see your sisters are making you check the tickets again. He said with a soft chuckle.

She rolled her eyes in annoyance, opening her purse and pulled out the seven lottery tickets and handed them to Lou. When don’t they make me do everything just because I am the baby of the family?

Tell me about it. My older brother and sister are the same way. My sister Priya was supposed to work today but she has a date so I am stuck doing her shift. He complained, though she knew he didn’t really have a problem with it. He was a good boy and always jumped to help his family.

He was a junior in high school and wanted to be a lawyer so he worked and saved every penny he earned. Though his parents would pay for his school he said he didn’t want to work during his first few years of school so he wanted to save as much as he could now.

Don’t worry Lou, if I win the lottery, I’ll give you $25 grand just for being my buddy. She told him handing him the tickets.

Lou grinned and took her tickets, scanning them one by
