    Chapter One

    There it was again, a sound Dominion had been hearing since the dawn of time. Soaring over his flock, the angel of death knew there were many who would meet him this night. But as he geared up for a long night of soul collecting, he found it difficult to concentrate, extremely rare for an angel of his station.

    He gathered his eternal light and focused his ancient senses and felt his first soul gathering of the night. He circled and landed near a limp body that had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. It was a young man in the wrong place at the wrong time, walking home.

    The lad looked to be no older than twenty. These kinds of violent, senseless deaths never sat well with Dominion, but there must have been something about his soul that was unique or special for the Father to call it home so abruptly. He knelt down to the young man and spoke into his mind.

    Joshua, I’m here to collect you.

    Your lips aren’t moving. I can’t feel my body. Why can’t I feel anything? Joshua asked, confused.

    Because you don’t need your human shell of flesh any longer. And my lips aren’t moving because I’m speaking with the soul that is Joshua. The explanation oddly didn’t rattle the young man. There’s nothing to fear, I promise. I’m taking you home.

    Joshua smiled up at him and let go. Slowly, Dominion glided his hand over Joshua’s body and the soul rose up from its human shell and spun in a circle, growing brighter until it formed a perfect florescent sphere of light that gently landed in the palm of his hand.

    Dominion blinked, and a single tear dropped from his deep brown eyes and landed on the sphere. His tear formed an impenetrable protective barrier for transport to the Gulf, also known as the Hall of Souls. There, it would be presented to the Father and be reassigned in the afterlife. Once the soul was secure, he raised it high and the feathers of his massive wings carefully opened and sealed the soul in a pocket of space.

    When his wings were done, they fanned out to alert Dominion they were ready to continue. Sometimes, he wondered why his beloved Father would give His angels great wings that were independent of their owners.

    He and his wings had been in a symbiotic partnership since they were created and had worked in harmony for millions of years. However, there had been a few times when he and his wings had not been of like mind, and it had caused Dominion no end of frustration. The last time had been during his final altercation with Lucifer. That day, he'd discovered his wings were quite independent of him when they wanted to be. They refused his command to expand and fly. They refused to take him anywhere near Morning Star. The day wore on, and eventually Morning Star sought him out. There was a battle that shook the very foundations of heaven itself. When it was over, Dominion had defeated his dearest friend and most beloved brother. With that defeat, Morning Star became forever known as the Fallen One.

    Dominion let the cold night wind ruffle through him and his wings. He ascended again into the sky, thinking it odd to have thought of the Fallen One at that moment. It was not like him to ever rehash the past. But just then, he couldn’t help what he felt.

    He really did miss his brother. Suddenly, a sensation vibrated through his eternal light. Even his wings felt the abrupt intrusion. He hovered in mid-flight, wallowing in the vague feeling of recognition. He focused and gasped.

    A sound—no, a voice, a beautiful voice that lured and pulled at him like nothing else ever had—well, not in a really long time, anyway. It washed over him in a rain of pure joy and showered him in tranquility. He closed his eyes and soaked up the feeling like he was starving. Nothing had ever felt or sounded so perfect.

    * * * *

    The Father had been watching Dominion, the Angel of Death, and found his thoughts interesting. It wasn’t like His child to become distracted, let alone allow thoughts of the Fallen One to cloud his actions. The Father reached into Dominion’s mind and discovered the reason for the disturbance. His eyes glistened with loving tears as He heard, in His child’s mind, the most incredible sound His children had ever created.

    He was not hearing just any sound, but rather the Very First Voice. If Dominion could hear it, then so could His other child, the Fallen One. Which could mean only one thing: Serenity, the First Voice, having been born in mortal form some years before, was coming into her powers.

    The Father exited His celestial gardens and as He did, He called to Dominion to return to heaven immediately.
