- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5When I first read Storm Dancer, I thought it was a richly detailed world. So I appreciated these stories, because I got to revisit some familiar places and cultures, and in some cases, get a deeper understanding of how that world works.
Understand, though, that I'm not saying you have to read Storm Dancer in order to appreciate these stories. Quite the contrary: I think if you read these first, and then Storm Dancer, you might just have a better appreciation for the latter.
Like most such collections, these stories were a bit of a mixed bag. In this case, they were mostly good. They're almost parabolic in their language, and the fact that there's a life lesson to be taken from each one. Because of their parabolic nature, they're all somewhat predictable... some of them, you'll be able to predict how it's going to end from the first paragraph, but others will keep you guessing until you're almost at the end. Either way, when they DO end, it's not really a big surprise.
But that's fine, because after the first story, you know what to expect, and you don't mind.
In fact, this collection almost got four stars from me. What dropped it to three was something that I found quite sneaky. It was shorter than I thought it would be, because of the long preview of Storm Dancer in the end. That, in itself, was okay; I was expecting a page or two, to whet potential readers' appetites, but it was so long it took up 42% of the book!
No, really: Scribd told me I was 58% done after the last story, and the next chapter was the sample of Storm Dancer, and the last page of that was the last page of the book.
Now, if you haven't read Storm Dancer yet, I'm sure you'll appreciate the nice long preview. It'll definitely get your mouth watering, and I'm sure it'll make you want to read the book. In my case, though, I just felt cheated.
