    Chapter One

I squirmed on the bench between my two best friends, Laynie and Alex, as they waxed poetic about fixing me up. Seriously, their matchmaking attempts had ruined my appetite for the bean and beef burrito on the table in front of me — and that’s saying a lot. Usually I could chow down Mexican food, day or night.

Oh, come on, Brittany. You can’t tell me there’s not one dateable guy in the whole school. Laynie pressed a hand against her forehead to shield her eyes from the noon sun and scanned the school grounds.

I followed Laynie’s gaze to the seniors spilled out onto the steps of the school entrance. Others sat on the low wall nearby or sprawled across the lawn in small cliques. Uhm, actually, I can, I said, digging my English Lit notes from my backpack. If I wasn’t going to eat, I could use the time for homework, which would free me up later to finish
