1986, THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA
Thank you Maria,
Adella said, allowing Maria to secure her nighttime dress by the zipper at the back.
Maria had put Adella to bed with the same routine for the past nineteen years. She’d help her get dressed then brush her long brown hair and braid it down the middle. The routine ended with Maria taking a small tube full of lavender out her apron and sprinkling several drops onto Adella’s pillow before she would rest her head.
You’re welcome, chica,
Maria replied, continuing her duty.
Of all her years on Earth, Maria had never married and very rarely contemplated having children of her own. Born to a maid, Maria had taken orders her whole life. Tonight, Adella would set her free.
Seeing Adella in mental pain caused Maria such grief.
Si usted no tiene inconveniente en que diciendo niño, usted no debe preocupar. El Sr Delgado parece un hombre suficiente agradable. (If you don't mind me saying child, you should worry not. Mr. Delgado seems like a nice enough man. I have no doubt that his promises to you are of a genuine kind),
she told Adella sincerely whilst she gently pulled the solid silver-tailed brush through her hair.
There will never be peace, Maria,
with swollen eyes, Adella tried her best to repeat the words her husband had spoken to her that evening.
I no understand,
Maria replied, catching the sadness in Adella’s voice, what do you mean?
Adella looked away and a single tear fell from her eye. She then pressed the intercom on the wall beside the bed.
It’s time,
she spoke clearly into the microphone.
The door to the cabin swung open which frightened Maria and startled Adella; she hadn’t expected such a quick response. Three henchmen strode into the cabin, each one built with very thick muscles. Adella turned her attention back to Maria.
Maria, you know my father; you know how he thinks. If he tracks us down, he will have you killed. There will be no time for a decent burial or time to wait until the police have investigated your death whilst we continue our journey across this sea,
Adella explained hastily as the henchmen approached the bunk.
Please, Adella! No! I beg of you!
Maria screamed. She tussled and pulled as two henchmen grabbed her by her arms, one at each of her sides, and forced her down onto her knees.
Spare me, will you not?
she begged and trembled as the third henchman stood behind her back and cracked his knuckles over her head.
I’m sorry, Maria,
Adella whispered, lowering and turning her head, shifting her guilty eyes.
Seconds later, she heard Maria’s neck snap. Adella held her breath and closed her eyes. The henchmen scurried about in her room, wrapping up poor Maria’s body and dragging her out onto the deck. Precisely sixty seconds later, Adella heard a faint splash. She waited until the henchmen re-entered her room and left through its main door before she flopped down onto her bed and cried.
BACK IN PORTOVELO, SPAIN
There will be plenty time for sleep later, Senorita!
Manny drenched a naked woman with the contents of a bucket he held in his hands. He had previously watched his henchman beat her and tie her to a wooden beam in the one bedroom love nest in Portovelo. He then threw the empty bucket aside and watched the young woman before him stir.
In the middle of the night, whilst the whole block was asleep, Juliana Hernandez was woken by a loud crash followed by a thud in her apartment. Scared, and
