Chapter One
Joining Our Heroes Back in Episode 22 of Book Two
Shirlee’s paw hovered above Big and Little as he used his increasing powers to hold them in place, the killing blow poised and ready.
A fist-sized rock struck the back of Shirlee’s head. He turned toward the new attacker at the entrance of the prison cave. Jack Jenkins had another rock ready and threw, hitting Shirlee who flinched from the pain, releasing Big and. Human!
He yowled, You will pay for your insolence.
As soon as they were free, Big and Little raced toward the cave entrance. It was obvious their power was not enough to stop Shirlee this time. As they ran, Little said, We have to find a way to beat him, Big. He can’t be allowed to win, no matter what.
Big nodded his head and called out to Jack to follow.
Jack obeyed, still a bit bemused that his dogs could talk, but the expanding red-eyed cat now stalking them seemed too threatening to worry about such trivial details as talking dogs. Okay Boy. No problem. Lead the way.
The three ran as fast they could through the dense black fog.
As soon as he discovered Big and Little’s escape, Shirlee roared so loudly the ground shook. Shirlee headed after the dogs, moving slowly because he was still unsteady on his new, larger legs.
Meanwhile, Bjorn, the Princess, Tiberius, and Zubin fought the guard dogs, Regina and Marcus to standoff. The guard dogs and some rancid candy stood their ground, fighting back multiple attempts by the Army of Light to retake the bridge. Regina was the first to see Big, Little, and Jack approaching.
Marcus, seeing their Master, through the fog, turned to Regina. We must stop them. If they cannot take the bridge, our master will come and destroy them.
Regina snarled, How we’ve waited for this day.
She turned to the remaining animated candy commanding them to hold their ground in such a way that the candy shivered in fear.
By the time Big, Little, and Jack reached their friends, time was short. Shirlee stumbled behind them, still clumsy on his new legs, but making progress. Big and Little stepped lightly, trying to avoid green goo they recognized as Fanged Mushroom guts. Bjorn said, We can’t take the bridge, it’s too narrow and the candy repels us at every point. We’re out of options.
Little surveyed the situation, then looking up asked, Zubin, can you focus your sonic ray into a single point?
Zubin nodded his head, Yes, but we don’t want to use the weapons on the bridge because if we crack it, we would have no escape at all.
Little said, I understand. I was thinking of aiming higher.
She nodded toward the ceiling.
Zubin understood and smiled, Of course, brilliant my dear.
He and Tiberius adjusted their sonic blasters to narrow the beam and aimed at the ceiling to the sides of the bridge. They fired, cutting the stone in a circle.
Shirlee was almost upon them, his red eyes glowing and becoming steady on his feet.
The sonic beams cut the ceiling which cracked. Pieces of rock fell into the river below the bridge. A great rumble signaled the heroes’ plan worked. Two huge chunks of ceiling collapsed down into the river on either side of the bridge. The splash created a double tidal wave that swept the candy army away. The guard dogs, Regina and Marcus, who were taken by surprise lost their footing as the water rushed passed them. A surprised guard dog is a goofy-looking guard dog, mouth gaping open and shut– eyes rolling crazily around. Unfortunately, the heroes didn’t have time to stop and appreciate the sight.
As soon as the waves collided, Little yelled out, Now!
The army plunged forward, across the now mostly unguarded bridge. The remnants of Shirlee’s army were in disarray. The Army of Light had no trouble skirting past Shirlee’s followers, and across the bridge. Behind, they heard the angry roar of Shirlee, as he realized his prey had escaped.
Now the plan was to get to the Underworld’s entrance and then trap Shirlee and his minions inside. Being the fastest, Big and Little raced ahead to scout out the territory. Star Crystals lit up the cave all around them, giving off enough light to see.
Big looked behind him and saw their army had fallen behind. He was about to tell Little they should wait up, when the exit came into view only thirty ahead, so, they stopped and turned to wait.
But then, to their horror, glowing red eyes moved slowly from the darkness brween them and the wall. Big was the first to see a paw flying through the air, heading straight for Little. He cried out, and Little jumped just in time, as the paw struck the cave floor, bits of rock flying everywhere.
The two raced for the doorway knowing it was their only hope for escape, Shirlee close on their tails. They tumbled out the open door to completely unfamiliar surroundings on the other side... All around was blackness, except for a bright pinpoint of light far away.
Big asked, "Where did we end up Little? This
