Doppelganger
The bright smell of lavender and sage seeped out the open door of a strange shop on Main Street. Duncan had never noticed the place before, but as he stood before it, he wondered how he could have missed such a weird little place. The shop was wedged between an overpriced clothing store and a weird bakery that sold only freshly made dog biscuits. It exuded a cacophony of bizarre and harsh smells, but what really caught Duncan’s attention was the display in the front window.
Burgundy cloth with a pattern of gold symbols blanketed the table and the back of the display. Duncan didn’t recognize the gold lettering, but he got the feeling that it meant something. There were other interesting things on the table, like a few old books, and what looked like packages of dried grass clippings. But his gaze found its way to a crystal globe the size of a small bowling ball in the center. A statue of three pretty young women in flowing dresses held the orb up about a foot from the tabletop. He stared into it and inspected the tiny bubbles and flaws within.
Pretty cool, huh?
his twin sister said. She stood behind him and peeked over his shoulder.
Yeah,
Duncan said. How much is it?
A lot.
She moved to stand beside him.
What sort of place is this?
Gwen
