Chapter One

Blake Matthews was at home, adjusting his red-colored tie in front of the mirror. He was dressed in a snappy black suede suit, beige shirt, and wore his comfortable leather brogues with flair. After finishing with his tie, he picked up the invitation to his high school’s reunion, which was taking place tonight. On the invitation, it had clearly inscribed, in beautiful calligraphic print:

"Dear Blake,

You are cordially invited to the 10th anniversary reunion of Campbell Vale High School, which will be held at the Madison Grand Hotel on the 9th February, 2013.

Please RSVP your intention to attend by the 1st January, 2013 for catering purposes.

We hope to see you there.

Blake looked at the invitation with great interest, and sensed a slight unease in his stomach. It had indeed been ten years since he graduated from high school, and, in some ways, it felt like yesterday. When he originally received the invitation, Blake immediately wanted to respond that he would not be attending, but, as with other reunions, there was curiosity on his part to see what became of the people he most associated with, and those with whom he never got along. What had become of these people, and, especially, what did they look like now? He originally rang Brittany Barker with his intention to decline the invitation, but the reassuring sound of her voice made him reconsider at the last minute.

Brittany was a good friend in high school, never teasing the other kids, and was popular, but never let it get to her head. She liked Blake a lot, and was the sister he never had. Brittany had witnessed Blake being mocked in school, and was one of his staunchest defenders. Blake recalled her delight that he would be coming, and said she would be extremely happy to have his presence at the reunion. Brittany knew Blake had had a rough time in high school, and if he did not attend, he was entirely justified. She was one of the only connections to high school he kept after all these years.
