    After Charles loosened the tourniquet on Andy’s arm and squeezed the syringe, the boy asked Uncle Charlie, what will the big room be tomorrow?

    Charles pulled the needle out of the boy’s vein and pressed his thumb against the puncture, willing it closed.

    Whatever you want it to be, he said.

    The drug worked quickly, and Charles had to strain to hear the boy mumble I want to climb to space to see gra- before falling asleep. Charles wondered if the boy would remember that wish in the morning. Probably. He had talked about space and his grandmother for years. The concern that the boy had grown suspicious about the big room overrode idle curiosity.

    Dream, he said to the sleeping boy as he dimmed the lights in the room to a pale glow using the manual slider. Some things were worth shifting, others not so much.

    He walked downstairs to the other end of the penthouse, to the farthest away point from the boy’s bedroom he could get. He picked up the phone and dialed a number. It picked up halfway through the first ring.
