Introduction to Hever Castle
Anne Boleyn is a lot of things to a lot of people. She’s right up there as one of the most controversial female figures in history. At worst, she’s seen as a whore and home wrecker. At best, she's portrayed as a saint and victim. But with two such divergent images it's difficult to say who she really was. The truth is likely somewhere in between.
A great place to explore the real life of Anne Boleyn is her childhood home Hever Castle in Kent, England. If you’ve managed to find your way to Hever Castle, then skip to the tour guide section of this book. Or if you have time, find a nice tree in the gardens to sit under and read up on the life of Anne Boleyn first.
Disclosure: while I am not a historian, I am a passionate student of history. Anne Boleyn was born more than five hundred years ago, which is a long time in history. Because of this, sometimes we don’t know exactly what happened. All we can do is conjecture based on the facts that we do know, and leave it up to historians (and dreamers!) to fill in the gaps.
This is a book about the life of the influential women who lived at Hever Castle (most notably Anne Boleyn) and a practical tour guide for your visit. At the end of the book you’ll find a bibliography and other resources to help you in your history studies. I invite you to form your own conclusions about the cast of characters that have called Hever Castle home and I hope that this is just the beginning of your historic journey.
Godspeed.

Getting to Hever Castle
Hever Castle is 30 miles from London in West Kent.
To get to Hever Castle, trains run from London Victoria and London Bridge (via Oxted or East Croydon) to Edenbridge Town Station. From Edenbridge rail station you can take taxi three miles to the castle.
In order to spend more time at Hever Castle, and less time waiting for a taxi you should book one in advance. You can call either:
Relyon Taxis 01732 863800
or Edenbridge Cars 01732 864009
If you are brave enough to drive, simply enter the post code TN8 7NG into your navigation system.
If you are brave enough to drive without a navigation system (or you are a Boy Scout,) take the M25 and exit at junctions 5 or 6. From either exit, the brown signs to the castle are easy enough to follow.
No matter which way you drive, be prepared that the roads are very, very narrow. If you think you’re going the wrong way, you’re probably going the right way.
Anne’s Life
Anne Boleyn’s earliest controversy started on her original birthday. This is because historians can't actually agree on the date and place.
