Frankie Boyle is unquestionably a very funny man, perhaps even one of the funniest around. Sadly, his sense of humour loses something in translation to the written word (and in my case, audio) and "My Shit Life So Far" is only occasionally humorous. Boyle relates his youth and some of the shenanigans of his university life, which, of course, included the times he secretly urinated in his room mates beer (I wonder if said former room mate read this book and realised he had been drinking essence of Boyle?) and his rise to fame via a number of bad television shows. If you can't see Boyle live then "My Shit Life So Far" may prove to be a good time waster.

Although Frankie is an excellent stand up comic, he does not seem to be a very good writer. The book contains quite a lot of punch line type jokes that are somewhat funny, however the overall story is pretty boring.

This book is basically as the title says, Frankie Boyle’s shit life so far. I only normally read biog’s about celebs I know of but my son said this was brilliant and I had to give it a go!! I’ve never seen Boyle on TV and only heard of him as he had caused a contraversy a few months ago that I saw on the news. With some of the things he’s says I’m laughing but with some things I’m cringing, he’s quite a cynical fella isn’t he! He says in the introduction that he lies a lot in this book (and I could certainly see where he was lying!) so how can this be a memoir if you don’t know if it’s the truth or not, or is it just his sense of humour, I don’t know. With that in mind a decided to read this book with a little scepticism and by doing that I enjoyed reading this book more than I thought I would. He’s quite an articulate and intelligent man. Very honest about his drinking and drug taking. Some parts of the book though were crude, obscene even and made it slightly uncomfortable reading in parts. I’m not sure why he wrote this book, celebs lately seem to bring out an autobiography every few years detailing their lives and I thought that would have been everything Boyle stood against but maybe he’s just another ‘celeb’ out to make a buck or two.Not sure if I would recommend this book, if your a big fan of Boyle then I would but if not then it might not interest you.

Despite myself I can't help laughing like a loon at Frankie Boyle's comments on Mock The Week. I got given his biography as a present and probably wouldn't have read it otherwise. Really glad I did though. This one of the few books that's made me laugh out loud. It's a really easy read. I think some of the funniest stuff is about his childhood in Glasgow - just a funny take on some of the mindless stuff you do as a kid. I like that there's also reference to current events and culture. It's written in a bit of a gonzo-esque style in that sometimes you can't tell the reality from the fiction - and I like that too. I guess also abit like Hunter S. Thompson in that, yes it's very funny, but there's also an underlying social awareness - very perceptive at seeing through the stuff alot of us don't.

Frankie Boyle is brilliant at writing and delivering sharp, witty comments, but it seems that autobiographical narrative is outside his comfort zone. Boyle includes many interesting and even laugh-out-loud funny bits in My Shit Life So Far, but the overall flow is a bit jumbled and we do not ultimately learn very much at all about Boyle's experiences. I enjoyed reading the book, and I am glad that some great Boyle material is captured in it, but I wish that he had actually told us more about his life so far in the process.

I do not, usually, read biographies of people still in their chosen profession. I believe that some distance is necessary for an understanding of a person's life to have developed. This book tends to support my theory. I am a big fan of FB's humour and so, broke my rule. Anyone who can reduce his fellow comedians to helpless balls of laughter, must have some talent! The book is, in parts, rambling with bits of script introduced in such a manner that I suspect Frankie was paid to produce a three hundred page book and, after turning out a two hundred and fifty page draft, he inserted random bits of his act.The biographical side of the work slips out almost in spite of Frankie Boyle's narration, rather than because of same. Our hero says that he will cease to tour after his next sojourn: it would be sad to see him go but, if he is strong enough so to do, it would see him quit at the top, rather than fading away as so many of his companions have done. It is hard to know what FB would do in a post touring life: even if he has made enough money not to need to work, I believe that his active brain would go quitely round the bend were he to just put his feet up. I am sure that all admirers of comedic talent hope that he finds a new niche: I, for one, will be looking out for his next creation.
