About this ebook
Eleven years after the disappearance of Edgar Allan Poe’s Arthur Gordon Pym aboard the Jane, wealthy American Jeorling is returning to the United States on the Halbrane when it encounters an iceberg on which is found a note indicating the fate of the Jane and its crew. The crew of the Halbrane, under the leadership of Captain Guy (brother to the captain of the Jane), undertakes to find and rescue the Jane’s remaining crew.
Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, Jules Verne intended An Antarctic Mystery to complete the mystery of Pym’s fate, which was left open at the conclusion of Poe’s original work. A high-sea adventure, An Antarctic Mystery takes readers to the very edge of the world, where the mystery of Arthur Gordon Pym’s fate is eventually revealed.

Jules Verne
Jules Gabriel Verne was born in the seaport of Nantes, France, in 1828 and was destined to follow his father into the legal profession. In Paris to train for the bar, he took more readily to literary life, befriending Alexander Dumas and Victor Hugo, and living by theatre managing and libretto-writing. His first science-based novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was issued by the influential publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel in 1862, and made him famous. Verne and Hetzel collaborated to write dozens more such adventures, including 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in 1869 and Around the World in 80 Days in 1872. In later life Verne entered local politics at Amiens, where had had a home. He also kept a house in Paris, in the street now named Boulevard Jules Verne, and a beloved yacht, the Saint Michel, named after his son. He died in 1905.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This was another one of Verne's books that didn't deliver the suspense and action that I am interested in. I feel this was a bit of a lackadaisical plot-line that did not fully make use of its characters and the intensity that the events could have been. Overall, it was a disappointing read and I don't recommend it.2 stars.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a sequel to Edgar Allen Poe's Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. In this book, Poe's book is considered by the narrator as fiction, and he is astounded at increasing evidence of the real existence of Arthur Pym and Dirk Peters. This is generally engaging tale of shipwrecks, mutinies, other disasters and strange discoveries, and I prefer it to Poe's original. The science and geography is outdated, and the resolution full of the credulity-stretching coincidences typical of 19th century literature, but worth a read as one of the better of Verne's lesser known works.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was intrigued with what Jules Verne was going to do with Edgar Allan Poe's story of 'Pym'... surprisingly Verne's story is almost sixty years after Poe published his only novel. The characters here think that Pym's story is real and so set out for Antarctica to find characters from Poe's story. For some reason, Verne decided on a full ten page recap of Edgar Allan Poe's entire novel and not just parts of the book relevant to this novel.... and then proceeded to omit some of the details of the original I thought were most important. Otherwise, it seems like Jules Verne just twists some things around from Poe's story, maybe tying up some loose ends, which is a problem I had with Poe's novel... but some of it seemed a little too coincidental... I can appreciate Verne wanting to improve upon the mess that I think Poe's story is though! Otherwise Verne sticks to a more realistic story, with some crazy natural events as Verne loves to throw in there.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5There were definitely some moments of adventure, but overall the narrator was simply too passive for my taste and I thought the story bogged down in quite a few places. It was really a slog to get through, without any of the horror of Poe's original story to break up the otherwise mediocre prose. Not to say it was awful - just that it had very little going for it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is just excellent. It cleverly completes Poe´s book and also adds to the original story. It has many twists and turns and keeps the tension on during the entire book.
