Economy: The Final Solution
()
About this ebook
The economy has collapsed once again and the government has tried every remedy other than anything that would harm the continued profitability of big business. The general population has had enough of suffering for the greed and criminality of others and has expressed its anger in a not so peaceful national uprising. The only recourse? The final solution.
The president and government leaders are holding a secret meeting at the presidential retreat during a long Independence Day weekend. The public was informed that it was merely a friendly gathering. A presidential cookout to celebrate the holiday. But in fact long prepared emergency plans are about to be implemented. The Final Solution is the New World Order.
Jim Pangrazio
The general consensus is that change is urgent. Yet those claiming to work toward that end choose illusory paths that serve more as an impediment to the change they profess to seek. It is a closed loop -- a path that follows itself -- a safe at home tour rather than an expedition in search of wherever. My plays attempt to untangle the complex knots created by repeated trips to nowhere by focusing on the fearful simplicity of uncontaminated life where acceptance and rejection meet to hash out what's bothering them.

Time: Near future. Place: Presidential retreat. Cast: Janet Gehlen, president's National Security Advisor. Stuart MacFinian, Treasury Secretary. Brett Conners, head of Homeland Security. Monica Spinelli, Speaker of the House. Henry Diamond, CEO of the Business Council. Jackie Singh Punjabi, President of the United States. They have gathered for a secret meeting during the long Independence Day weekend. The nation is experiencing a sudden increase in national strife and protest due to the effects of the worst economic crisis in it's history. The president and family are housed nearby. As far as the public knows, those in attendance have simply been invited by the president to enjoy the holiday weekend with him and his family.
(All but president drift into the conference room singly and in pairs. They have just left the presidential cookout and have had their fill of good food and drink. Stuart and Brett are carrying drinks. The room has the appearance of a rustic fortress. Long table with chairs. Glasses and beverages on table. There is no one to serve them because of privacy concerns. We can hear a dog barking outside.)
STUART: Did you hear the one about Adam Smith being a dipsomaniac?....thus the shaky invisible hand of the market (shaking hand holding his drink).
HENRY: (with much self assurance) All such movements are within the bounds of a market economy.
BRETT: Yeah, but so is our demise.
STUART: And still the anarchists hate us!
MONICA: (With disgust) We party while 'Rome' burns!
BRETT: (Smiling, no worries) Well, as for me...I found my prime rib exquisitely medium rare.
JANET: May we all be seated, please? (She seats herself at the head with the rest on both sides of the rectangular table) The president was very pleased that all of you arrived presenting a casual appearance for the photographers. He may visit us later, but for now I will serve as his representative. (Taking out a voice recorder, she stands it on the table after clicking it on) Of course you all know each other, but for the record, I am Janet Gehlen, the president's National Security Advisor. To my left Brett Conners, Secretary of Homeland Security. To his left, Monica Spinelli, Speaker of the House of Representatives. To my right, Henry Diamond, CEO of the Business Council. To his right, Stuart MacFinian, Secretary of the Treasury....
STUART:...I object to being placed
