CHAPTER ONE
Soon it’ll all be over.
Adriana Mendoza sat in the hot classroom and tried to focus on the calculus exam in front of her. It was a warm day for San Diego. God, she thought. It was just like her to end up with calculus last. Her friends had mostly finished finals and were already celebrating graduation while she’d been stuck studying until the very last minute. She couldn’t blow it either. She’d been accepted to Stanford for over a year, but the test could still affect what classes she could take next fall. She flipped her long dark waves to her other shoulder to cool off and refocus. An hour and a half later, she put her pencil down for the last time as a student at Bryant High.
Adriana walked down the hall and around the corner to her nearly empty locker. Her best friend, Christy, leaned against the wall, waiting for her impatiently.
So, how’d you do?
Okay, I think. At least I’m done now.
So, of course you’re going to go to Kyle’s party tonight then.
Adriana sighed. It wasn’t a question. And no, she didn’t particularly want to go. She unlocked her locker and grabbed her backpack. She took one last look at her empty locker before slamming it shut.
Sure, I’ll go for a while. But we’re taking separate cars in case you get hung up.
More like in case she hooked up. Christy had just recently broken up with Jason Moore, her boyfriend of two years. She decided she didn’t want to do the long distance thing when they left for college, which Adriana thought was a good move. But for the last week, Christy had been all over anything that moved. She was done hanging out in a corner by herself while Christy made out with some guy on the couch. And she’d made Adriana late for her curfew—twice!
Christy sighed. Okay, fine. I’ll meet you there. Ten o’clock?
Adriana shook her head. Better make it nine-thirty. My parents were kind of mad about last Saturday.
God, it’s not like they can follow you to Stanford and enforce a curfew there.
I think they’re trying to fit some extra parenting in before I leave for school,
Adriana said with a giggle.
They walked through the school doors and headed to the parking lot. Christy threw up her hands.
Here it comes, Adriana thought.
You know, I don’t know how you deal. I’m glad they’re not my parents. They would drive me insane.
I’ll see you tonight.
As Adriana drove home in her little secondhand silver Jetta, she thought about how she was going to get permission to go out that night. Her parents hadn’t been just mad on Saturday, they’d been livid. She came from a very traditional Mexican home. Her parents were both Catholic, and they’d worked very hard to send Adriana and her younger sister, Claudia, to private schools. Actually, she really liked that her family was close, especially when she saw families like Christy’s. Her parents were so busy and self-absorbed. They barely knew Christy was alive.
Adriana pulled into the driveway. She looked into the front window as she walked up the front steps. She could see the reflection of the TV on the glass.
Busted,
Adriana said on her way through
