About this ebook

Police work is often funny, sometimes scary, but always interesting. Cops share their stories with each other all the time, often over coffee, or over drinks after work. The tales cover the spectrum of humorous to deadly. Often, it is not what happens to the criminal or the citizen that makes the "war stories," so compelling, but what happens to the cop, who daily wears the badge and carries a gun as he patrols his beat. These are the stories of "Cop Tales":
In "The Scar," a rookie learns a secret about his Field Training Officer
"Post Shooting Trauma," takes you into a gun fight and shows the unexpected aftermath.
During a "Day of Rest," the unseen police dispatcher serves as a critical and often under-appreciated part of public safety.
Through "Family Ties," veteran cops, prepared for violence, use tools not on their gun belts.

    Foreword

More than 30 years on the job as a cop has given me plenty of stories. Some are my own, but most are from the men and women I worked with over the years.

Cop stories are a little different from stories in other businesses. The underlying specter of death of a victim, a suspect, or the cop pervades each tale. Police work is serious business.

Yet, there is a lighter side to the job as well. When a police officer enters a person’s life, it’s usually because that person is having problems. It may be due to an argument with a spouse. Maybe he’s been assaulted or robbed. Or maybe the person is a suspect in a crime. For all that, I’ve found that often the best police stories are about the cops themselves. The human side of police work and how it impacts people is fascinating, sometimes sobering, and often funny.

Though inspired by events I’ve experienced or heard of, these stories are fiction. The twists and turns are of my creation. Loosely set in my home town, the setting for these tales could be anywhere. Cop stories are universal.

My favorite police author is Joseph Wambaugh. His books tell how cops think, how they feel, and shows how they live. His stories show that cops are humans working a job that is de-humanizing. Wambaugh’s books are not the traditional police procedurals; I call them police culturals. Wambaugh’s stories show how doing the job of police work, particularly in an urban setting, impacts the men and women who wear the badge. Stories of policing are funny, scary, crazy, but always entertaining.

My greatest hope is that Cop Tales provides you with
