    Chapter One

September 22nd 2000 - It was just starting to rain, the sky was getting darker, heavy rainclouds started to appear overhead. Shoppers that were out and about near the High Street moved quickly looking for cover on this rainy Saturday afternoon. Some had brought umbrellas; some ran for cover under the shop canopies. A storm was coming.

The Smith family had spent the day shopping, it was coming up to John and Lucy's wedding anniversary and John wanted to buy something special for her. As soon as the rain had stopped, they would head back down the High Street towards the jewellers, but first things first.

Jay, would you like a milkshake? John asked.

Yes please Dad, Jay said peering over his comic book; ‘The Trust – World’s Greatest’ was his comic book of choice. He had read it for as long as he could remember.

Jay had tagged along with the shopping duties, partly because there was no-one to watch him; his sister, Emma was at a friend’s house; shopping with parents wasn’t 'cool' she constantly told them, and ‘she wouldn’t be seen dead’ out with them, unless she wanted something of course. Jay didn’t mind, he was promised a milkshake at the end if he stayed out of trouble and helped out.

I wish you wouldn't read those comics Jay, they will warp your mind said his Mum, Lucy.

Nonsense, they are just a bit of escapism his Dad replied.

John, he is seven, he can escape to the garden Lucy replied.

Jay wasn’t listening to parents; he didn't read them to escape, he read them for knowledge. His dad kept telling him that he can grow up to be whatever he wants; there are no limits, as long as you always do the right thing. Jay decided he was going to be a superhero when he grew up. He wanted to help people, just like The Trust did.

Let’s take the short-cut John said hurrying them along.

Are you sure it’s safe? Lucy asked.

It’s a Saturday afternoon, who would be out causing trouble now? Plus it puts us closer to that café that we promised Jay we would take him too, and we get out of the rain quicker, every one’s a winner he said feeling the drops of rain on his hand as he held it out..

Jay heard that bit, and smiled.

They turned into the alleyway, which was made into a shortcut from the main High Street to the side street, where all the eateries are; especially Jay’s favourite one that served the best strawberry milkshake in town. As many people used it as a shortcut, a lot of pressure was put on the council to make it safe, all the streetlights worked. The council cleaned it up and maintained it well.

As they walked through and got about half way, the alleyway took a zigzag direction. As they turned the last corner, they saw a small group of people hanging around out of sight from both entries of the alleyway. They looked like troublemakers. There was something not right about this, Lucy held on to John's arm tight and kept Jay close to her. The group came closer, and then stood in their way blocking their path.

Jay peered around from behind his mum; he saw that there seemed to be three guys and a girl, no older than twenty five, dressed in dark colours, more than likely part of a gang.

John held his family tight and turned around to go back the way they came.

Two more stepped out, a girl and a guy. There were now six, and they surrounded the family. There was an eerie silence in the alleyway; it was if all the noise in the world had been muted; just for this moment.

We don't want any trouble, here take it John said, holding out his wallet.

One of the gang members stepped forward, and knocked it out of his hand. The Smith family were scared, the gang started to laugh.

It’s not your money we want, but everyone’s a winner one of them said with a smile that showed fangs.

    Lucy screamed.

June 09th 2013 - Jay woke up in a pool of sweat, it was just a nightmare, the same nightmare he had most nights.

Yet for Jay it was more than that, he had lived through it. Jay rubbed his face and looked at his alarm clock. It was 05:50.

Once again awake before the alarm goes off. Why do I even bother setting this damn thing, or even going to bed at all? I might as well be a creature of the night. He thought to himself. This had become an annoying routine now, one he needed to break; for his own sanity.

Jay got out of bed and put on his running gear. He found when he couldn’t sleep he would go for a run, try to burn off or beat back whatever was stopping him from getting a good night’s sleep, try to push it out of his mind. He subconsciously touched a silver cross that he wore, he never took it off. It belonged to his mother and has sentimental value to him; a part of him believed that it might bring him luck.

It was slowly becoming apparent that it wasn’t working; the luck or the running. No matter how many runs Jay went for, or how far he ran; the nightmare returned, and it was becoming more frequent now, he could not run from it.

    Chapter Two

June 09th 2013 approximately 06:50 - Running through the side streets and back alleys of the city; Lisa was running for her life. She had been chased all night by two attackers; two pursuers who had been relentless in their hunt.

Lisa had dropped her phone jumping across a rooftop and was unable to contact help; help she desperately needed right about now.

She had been chased all over the old part of the city, the part that had not been earmarked for redeveloped yet, and was now trying to catch her breath in an alleyway not too far from the local park near a residential area. She had been chased from rooftop to rooftop, alleyway to alleyway, she was being hunted. At one point Lisa thought she had lost them, she stuck close to the shadows, only leaving its safety when the coast was clear, just as she had been taught to do. They were never too far behind her. They effortlessly chased her across the rooftops, making in-human leaps across buildings. From the outside you could mistake them for parkour or street runners, there movement even seemed graceful, but their intent was deadly. Lisa knew the attackers, or more importantly who had sent them; Thomas St. Ville.

He had been after her for as long as she could remember, or more importantly what she was entrusted with. Lisa was charged with keeping safe a powerful Vessel, one that if got into the wrong hands such as Thomas’s, could mean disaster for not only the city; but possibly the existence of the human race.

She needed Rebekka right now; she would know exactly what to do. The last time they spoke things got a little heated, they parted on less then amicable terms. Rebekka was her protector, her Guardian. Right now she needed her to be her saviour.

Rebekka had warned Lucy that she was getting too wild in her antics, that she wasn’t taking her role seriously enough. She would often spend her nights partying at different clubs all over the city, drawing too much attention to herself.

Am I not allowed to enjoy myself? I have been doing this for ten years, since I was sixteen. Am I not allowed to blow off some steam? Was her answer whenever this conversation came up.

That was the last thing she had said to Rebekka, before she had ‘dropped off the radar’ about a week ago. Truth be told, Lisa felt so guilty about leaving it like that, she would give anything to take it back right now. Rebekka had been nothing but brilliant when she took over from her previous Guardian; Mason about a year ago. She could not fault her for this. It was over the last four months that Lisa began to doubt herself; and what she was doing. Something inside her was guiding her towards this path of self-destruction. She was convinced of it. She had tried to ignore it at first, tell herself it was all in her head, but that voice got louder. Loud enough to the point that it was shouting, screaming inside her head. She would do anything to make it stop, make it go away, turn it off, banish it forever. Alcohol helped dull that noise. It also dulled her senses. That’s how she was spotted by Thomas’s goons; Daniel and Gabriel. They had followed her about four hours ago from a club. She had no idea if it was by chance or if they had her under surveillance. How could I have been this stupid? She asked herself. One of them had even tried to chat her up. She clocked on that something was amiss when he accidentally mentioned her name in the conversation; without her giving it to him. She sobered up quickly, grabbed her coat and took off out of the bar. That is when the chase started, her marathon throughout the city. She was smart enough to stay off the main streets, but eventually they caught up to her. It felt like it had only been a matter of time.

Lisa had her back up against the wall; but she wasn’t going out without a fight. If she could take out one of them; even up the odds, she might have a chance. The attackers closed in for the kill.

    Chapter Three

Hoodie up, earphones in, music on, running to the beat, Jay looked at his watch; he could see that he wasn't going to make it.

24:30, time kept increasing, so close! He thought just half a lap to go. 24:40, at his next glance.

His legs were feeling the burn, his chest was breathing in hard, his lungs were at full capacity, and his heart was beating hard and fast. 24:50.

Come on, move quicker. Jay was pounding the concrete path hard, glancing down at his watch all the time.

25:00 flashed on his watch. 25:00 25:00 25:00 kept repeating.

Damn it! he said out loud, making the world know he wasn’t happy for not beating his time. Coming to a complete stop, he glanced around the park; it was still early, too early for most people to be up; no one else was running, or was around to hear his outburst, he was thankful for that, there were worse things in the world to be mad about.

Bent over, arms on hips, trying to catch his breath, Jay started to walk it off. The feeling in his legs was coming back. Maybe next time he chuckled to himself, isn’t that what I said the last time? This started to become his mantra. He needed a new mantra.

After a few minutes of catching his breath and walking up and down, he jogged to the park gates and made his way home. This was his routine. This was his comfort zone. This is where he was free. Free to forget everything. Here it was just him, the music, and the path lay out in front of him, just the way he liked it.

It was about six thirty and the sun was coming out. Summer was around the corner, some had said
