REDWOOD RAPTURE
PROLOGUE
They were both breathing heavily as they climbed the final slope to the place – their place. They had made this trip many times.
She stumbled and there he was, right next to her, steadying her, gently leading her to the top. The cool afternoon breeze felt good. They reached the clearing. He embraced her and gazed at her with an intensity that still made her weak in the knees. This place was as familiar as an old friend. He reached down and lovingly tucked a damp wisp behind her ear.
God, you're beautiful,
he murmured as he buried his face in her auburn hair and inhaled deeply. Her arms encircled his waist and she slid her hands up across his back and finally came to rest possessively on his backside, giving his cheeks a playful squeeze.
He leaned back and looked at her with adoration. She was flushed and perspiring. Just as she was on their first visit twenty-five years ago.
CHAPTER ONE
Her breath was coming in short gasps.
I haven't been to the gym in months, Teagan thought wryly as she shifted the heavy pack on her back. Suck it up buttercup, she chided herself. They made their way steadily through the woods. They left the trail well over an hour ago and she was beginning to wonder if Nathan knew where he was going. The man was clearly on a mission.
The rainy season had ended three weeks ago and everything was lush and green. The forest had that fresh, earthy smell of rebirth. She breathed deeply and savored the cleansing scent of eucalyptus.
They were surrounded by thick vegetation. The chickadees chirped excitedly, flitting among the giant trees in a frenzy of activity. The forest was alive. It was a feast for the senses. She had moved to California nine months ago and had never been this far up the coast. She couldn't get over the sheer beauty of it all as they wound their way along The Avenue of the Giants. The towering redwoods were something she had only seen on The National Geographic channel. Everywhere she looked reminded her of an iconic Ansel Adams photograph.
The path was narrow and he was several paces ahead of her. She enjoyed watching him from behind. She loved the way he moved, the way his clothes fit him. There was no pretense. At just over six feet tall, Nathan was long and lean. He had a thick head of dark, wavy hair. His blue eyes were intense and his broad shoulders gave way to a trim waist, slim muscular legs, and a firm backside.
He glanced over his shoulder at her and saw how flushed she was.
