Another Man's Wife - Donald Lamp

    Introduction

Waves of giddiness seemed to have a vice around his head. He thought he could hear the wail of an ambulance siren in the distance, people milling around him, he was swimming through depths of nausea, being lifted by unknown hands. Then, the roar of silence, once again, and, darkness. He woke in a hospital bed, surrounded by all the paraphernalia of a pristine, aseptic surgical ward. He must have groaned, as a hovering nurse padded softly over to his side. There you go, finally awake you are…! On asking her where he was, and how he had landed up in hospital, she enlightened him to his circumstances. He had been caught in one of the severest windstorms in recent history, but his woes had not ended there, she said. She gently lifted the sheet covering him. His lower torso was swathed in bandages, especially around his pelvis. With a shock it all came back in a flash, before he succumbed to merciful oblivion again…..!

Yorker was among the country’s smaller towns, spreading inland from the scraggy cliffs which fell far away to the sea below. Walking inland, there was a lot of greenery and forest cover on the outer areas of the town. Don Lamb’s family had lived in this town for more than thirty five years, from the year before he was born. Time seemed to have passed Yorker slowly, and progress, if you could call it that, not at all. The huddle of buildings that were an apology for the industrial factory belt on the outskirts of the town, had very few of the original industrialist owners left. Most of the peer group with whom he had grown to adulthood, had left for bigger cities in search of better futures. But Don was content in the familiar surroundings of Yorker. He had a job in one of Yorker’s newly established BPO companies.
