The letterbox flap slammed shut indicating the arrival of mail. Nathan went into the hallway and bent down to retrieve it. There were a few letters. He flicked through them – bill, bill, junk, bill, and what was this? The plain brown envelope was addressed to him, but he didn’t recognise the handwriting and it was pretty unusual for him to receive anything personal through the post unless it was his birthday. He wandered into the living room and sat down on the sofa. He put the bills to one side and tore open the envelope.

The colour began to drain from Nathan’s face, as he examined the piece of paper contained in the envelope. There was just a single line of writing: ‘You didn’t think you would be able to escape from me that easily, did you?’ It sounded rather menacing. A stalker could have written that, but Nathan didn’t have a stalker as such. He knew exactly who had sent it, but he still couldn’t quite believe it. He had been so careful not to reveal where he lived or any specific details about his family, friends or colleagues to her, so how on earth had she tracked him down?

Nathan was trying not to panic. After all, she hadn’t made any demands of him or done anything that would lead to his secret being uncovered, yet.
