    About the Author

    INTRODUCTION

Brazil is hosting the World Cup with a lot of enthusiasm and I am glad I will be there and take pleasure in it. We Brazilians have a fascinating country, renowned for its music, dance, natural beauty and friendly people with good reason. Soccer fans attending the World Cup 2014 in Brazil will enjoy the experience. Brazilians love to have fun and we welcome others to join in. In this special time for us and for soccer fans we will go out of our way to show the best of ourselves and the country.

It certainly is a great time to be in Brazil. Thirty-two countries are coming to compete for the biggest soccer title, Champion of the World. On top of that, the game, futebol as it is know, is the major sport in the country. Count on a huge celebration in and out of stadiums. Expect lots going on in the twelve host cities, but the whole country will be participating with much excitement too.

Brazil is a big country and it takes time to get to know it well. Therefore, the main focus is on facts and insights mostly about each of Brazil’s World Cup host cities. Location, residents, local newspapers, weather and main attractions in the city and respective state are included. Brief but relevant aspects of the World Cup and Brazil’s history and culture are added. Of course, we introduce a bit of Portuguese vocabulary.

Throughout this informational book I weave in travel tips and suggestions. I have been to many of the cities and places mentioned but contain myself to sporadic personal remarks. Our intent is to help you navigate Brazil with ease and confidence and motivate further exploration.

    Enjoy!

    Se divirta!

    World Cup Highlights

Soccer is one of the world’s most beloved sports. It provides much entertainment and enjoyment to millions of people. The World Cup is the ultimate expression of teams’ competitive athleticism. Many countries participate with intense emotions. Who would think that early civilizations grasp of the concept of kicking a ball, competing and winning would lead to such an event? Historically, England is known as the developer of modern soccer. In the 18th century the game progressed from fun gatherings to having set rules, culminating with the creation of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) in 1904. Increasing popularity and organization led to the first World Cup which was held in Uruguay in 1930. It has happened every four years since, except for the duration of World War II. The list below shows the years it was held, countries in which it took place and the winning team.
