About the Author
Chapter 1: Lucky Charms
Jack Holliday sat at his grandmother’s kitchen table savoring every sweet, crunchy bite he took. He had one arm wrapped protectively around the bowl and with the other he positioned the cereal box directly in front of him. He ducked his head down so that his four-year-old little brother, Peter, couldn’t see him from across the table.
Jack, I can still see you!
Peter said, trying to peer over the top of Jack’s box from his chair.
I can’t see you though,
Jack said. What about now, if I duck way down can you still see me?
Not anymore!
Peter said. All I see now is the box of Lucky Charms.
This cereal is my favorite,
Jack said, eating the last piece of cereal and anticipating eating the first marshmallow, which he had purposely saved for last.
Mine too,
Peter said. And look, my milk turned green from the marshmallows!
I like the rainbows the best,
Jack said.
I like the green flowers,
Peter said.
Those aren’t flowers Peter, those are called shamrocks,
Jack corrected. Leprechauns like shamrocks.
Do leprechauns like to eat Lucky Charms too?
Peter asked.
Lucky does. They’re magically delicious!
Jack sang out.
Are you boys eating shamrocks for breakfast?
their grandmother asked, walking into the kitchen. Did you know that shamrocks come from the country of Ireland? Sometimes it’s called the Emerald Isle because its land is covered in beautiful dark green countryside.
Have you been to Ireland, grandma?
Jack asked, spooning the last marshmallow from his bowl into his mouth.
I have. Your grandfather and I went on a trip there several years ago. It was one of the prettiest places I’ve ever visited.
Were there any leprechauns?
Peter asked.
I didn’t see any leprechauns that time, but I did see lots of old castles, beautiful lakes and hundreds of sheep,
their grandmother said.
Why do they have so many sheep there?
Jack asked.
Because so much of the land in Ireland is covered in rich, green grasses that the sheep like to eat,
their grandmother explained. And the sheep herders use special dogs to keep the sheep from wandering away from the rest of the herd.
What kind of dogs?
Jack asked.
Lots of them use Collies, which are very smart, athletic dogs.
What were the castles like that you saw?
Jack asked.
They were very old, and some were large and small were smaller, like the size of a regular house,
their grandmother said.
Did you get to go in any of them?
Jack asked.
Oh yes, we toured several. We even had dinner at one that was just like the dinners they used to have in medieval times.
What does that mean?
Peter asked.
It means it felt like we were back in the days when kings and queens and knights ruled the land,
their grandmother said.
Cool,
Jack said.
There was even a jester who performed for us.
What was your favorite thing about Ireland?
Jack asked. His grandmother thought for a minute.
I think my favorite thing was just seeing all the incredible scenery,
she said. And I’ve never seen land so green before.
What makes it so green?
Jack asked.
"Because it rains a lot
