The Inventor’s Throne
I’m telling you, Levi, this new railroad is going to change the west. As soon as that train arrives, I plan to be on it. California holds a lot of opportunity for a man like me.
Coming through the alleyway, Ellie froze as she recognized that voice. It was strong and deep, yet carried an educated aristocratic lilt.
The voice belonged to Marcellus Quick, a man that looked out of place in the dusty far west. His tall, athletic form was disguised beneath a tailored brown long coat with dark, distressed leather collar and pocket details. There were no spurs on his boots, and instead of a cowboy hat, he wore goggles on a leather strap that was currently pushed up over his brow. The odd head gear was necessary due to his unusual mode of transportation, but it was also a testament to his genius. The man was a brilliant inventor and a well respected citizen, despite his lack of gun belt.
Ellie leaned a little further around the edge of the building so she could capture a better look at her secretive hero. The dapper gentleman stood a full head taller than Mayor Levi, which would make him head and shoulders taller than Ellie. His hair was black as coal and chopped to a ragged edge near his jaw line, pieces of it falling forward to curtain sharp blue eyes. Eyes that almost glowed blue, like twin gas-lantern flames.
He had a scar – or rather a brand – across his right cheek, but not like any brand that any cow ever wore. Instead, it looked as if his face had been momentarily pressed to the heated surface of a gear train. She’d heard town folks whispering about how he received that scar, but all the stories varied. Nobody really knew, except maybe the mayor or the sheriff, but they weren’t talking about it. The two men seemed to hold the inventor in too much respect to talk about his past.
Now here was Marcellus talking about leaving Ironcreek. Leaving before Ellie ever got a chance to talk to him. Before he was even aware of her existence, unless she counted the few times she’d managed to catch his eye on the boardwalk.
If he left now, she would never see
